The American Eagle Gold Coins are one of the most popular and widely recognized bullion coins in the world. First released in 1986, these coins are an homage to the original pre-1933 gold eagle coins. On the obverse is the iconic Augustus Saint-Gaudens rendition of Lady Liberty carrying a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The coins were updated in 2021 to include modifications that more closely reflected the original design.
Until 2021, the reverse of American Gold Eagle Coins depicted an eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a second eagle and hatchlings. In 2021, a new design was revealed featuring a simple portrait of an eagle’s head. These newer American Gold Eagle coins also incorporated additional security features such as a reeded edge.
Each American Gold Eagle Coin contains 91.67% pure gold alloyed with 3% silver and 5.33% copper to enhance durability and resist scratching. The iconic coins are available in four weights: 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz, with the classic 1 oz denomination carrying a face value of $50 USD.
