The Silver American Eagle coin is amongst the most popular bullion coins worldwide with tens of millions coins sold each year. As the official coin of the United States, Silver American Eagles are struck exclusively in 1 oz sizes from 99.9% pure silver and have a face value of $1.
First released in 1986, these coins feature a modified version of Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, first featured on the half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. This is widely considered to be the most beautiful American coin ever minted. In 2021, the design was refreshed to add even more of Weinman’s original details.
From 1986-2021, the reverse of Silver American Eagle Coins featured John Mercanti’s design of a heraldic eagle with a shield, carrying an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in the left. Since 2021, the reverse now shows an eagle coming in for landing carrying an olive branch. The Latin motto ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ features on the reverse of all coins, translating to ‘Out of many, one’.
Since 2021, new coins include improved security features such as reeded edge variation.
