The Gold Britannia is one of the oldest bullion coins in Europe, first released in 1987. Each coin is struck from 24-karat, 99.99% pure gold and is considered legal tender in the UK with 1 oz coins having a face value of £100.
This instantly recognizable flagship coin features a design of the Lady Britannia, the personification of Britain, on its reverse. Gold Britannias released before 2024 feature a profile of the late Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, while coins dated 2024 and later feature the effigy of King Charles III.
Widely regarded as one of the most visually secure coins in the world, each Gold Britannia released after 2021 incorporates four advanced security features. These include a latent image that changes from a padlock to a trident, a micro-text inscription of the Latin motto, DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’; surface animation creating the illusion of waves in the coin’s background, and very finely detailed tincture lines.
