First introduced in 1967, Gold Krugerrands were the world’s first bullion coins initially released to market South African gold. By 1980, these coins accounted for 90% of the global coin market and they remain one of the most famous bullion coins today. Gold Krugerrands are a portmanteau of Paul Kruger, the first Boer president of South Africa, and rand, the official South African currency.
Gold Krugerrands are struck from 22-karat (91.67%) gold and contain one full troy ounce of gold. The remaining 8.33% is a copper alloy that makes these coins more durable than pure gold coins and imparts a distinctive reddish hue.
On the obverse of the Gold Krugerrand is a portrait of Paul Kruger with the words South Africa written in both Afrikaans and English. On the reverse is an image of a springbok animal, one of South Africa’s national symbols. Although these coins are considered legal tender in South Africa, they have no face value.
