The American Gold Buffalo Coin, first issued in 2006, is the United States Mint’s first ever 24-karat gold coin and is exclusively available in a 1 oz size. 

Inspired by the iconic Type I Buffalo Nickel, these coins feature the same iconic designs created by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The obverse of the American Gold Buffalo features a powerful image of a Native American Chief in profile, a composite portrait inspired by three different Native American leaders. This design first appeared on the Buffalo Nickel in 1913, largely considered one of the most beautiful American coins ever produced. 

The reverse depicts Black Diamond, an American bison who lived in Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. This image, also designed by Fraser, captures the strength and resilience of this iconic American animal.
