Australian Gold Kangaroos are some of the world’s most well-known bullion coins. First released in 1989 as the Australian Gold Nugget, initial releases of the coin featured images of natural gold nuggets found in Australia. In 1989, the Perth Mint released a proof edition displaying Australia’s iconic marsupial, a leaping kangaroo, surrounded by sunlight. The rest is history.
Each year, Gold Kangaroos are released with a new design on the reverse featuring artistic impressions of kangaroos in different poses. The reverse also displays the coin’s name, weight, purity, year of issue, and the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. Until 2024, the obverse featured the Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, and since then all new coins feature Dan Thome’s effigy of King Charles III.
These beloved coins feature a two-toned frosted effect and are released in limited mintages. New designs released each year add to their collectible nature. Gold Kangaroos are legal tender in Australia and each 1 oz coin has a face value of $100 AUD.
