Key Takeaways
- Launch month: The Perth Mint’s official calendar gives the Australian Kangaroo 2027 Bullion Coin Series a release date of “November 2026 (exact date TBC)” (checked 5 October 2026).
- Still unknown: the exact day, the 2027 design, the sizes and the mintage have not been published by the mint.
- UK pre-orders exist: on 5 October 2026, BullionByPost listed the 2027 1 oz coin “from £3,370” with a placeholder image.
- Tax is the UK twist: the coin is VAT-free investment gold, but unlike a Britannia or Sovereign it is not sterling, so gains can fall under Capital Gains Tax.
- Today’s 1 oz price: the cheapest Kangaroo in our UK comparison cost £3,272.29 including postage, 4.4% over spot, on 5 October 2026.
The Kangaroo 2027 is the next annual gold bullion coin from The Perth Mint in Western Australia, and UK dealers have started taking interest before the coin even exists. If you are wondering when it lands, whether it is worth waiting for and how it is taxed in Britain, this guide is for you.
We use only what The Perth Mint has published, plus real prices from our Kangaroo gold coin price comparison. Where something has not been announced yet, we say so plainly rather than repeating forum rumours.
Kangaroo 2027 Release Date
The Perth Mint keeps a public schedule of its upcoming bullion launches. When we checked it on 5 October 2026, the Kangaroo entry under the 2027 Australian Bullion Program read “Release date: November 2026 (exact date TBC)”. You can see the live version on the Perth Mint upcoming releases page.
Three notes on that page are worth reading twice:
- new coins go on sale from 8.30am Western Australian time, which is half past midnight in London during GMT,
- the mint calls the schedule “only a guide” and says dates may change,
- not every size is necessarily available on launch day, and the mint will advise when the others follow.
So when will a UK buyer actually receive one? That depends on when British dealers receive their stock from Perth. Expect pre-orders first and deliveries later, as with most new releases.
The other 2027 Perth Mint launches
The Kangaroo sits in a busy calendar. This is what the mint listed on 5 October 2026:
| Series | Release date | Sizes listed by the mint |
|---|---|---|
| Lunar Series III 2027 Year of the Goat | 8 September 2026 | Gold 10 oz to 1/20 oz, silver 1 kilo to 1/2 oz, platinum 1 oz |
| Kangaroo 2027 | November 2026 (exact date TBC) | None listed yet |
| Kookaburra 2027 | January 2027 (exact date TBC) | Silver 1 kilo, 10 oz, 1 oz |
| Koala 2027 | May 2027 (exact date TBC) | Silver 1 kilo, 1 oz |
What Has Been Confirmed, and What Has Not
Before you pre-order, it helps to know which details are fixed. Here is the status on 5 October 2026:
| Detail | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Release month | Confirmed | November 2026, exact day to be confirmed |
| Reverse design | Not announced | Dealers show placeholder images |
| Sizes and metals | Not announced | The 2026 series came in gold, silver and platinum |
| Mintage | Not announced | The 2026 1 oz gold coin had an unlimited mintage |
| Purity and weight | Not announced for 2027 | The 2026 1 oz coin: 99.99% gold, at least 31.107 g |
The BullionByPost pre-order listing
One of the first UK listings we found was on BullionByPost. On 5 October 2026 its page for the “2027 1oz Australian Kangaroo Gold Nugget Coin” showed:
- a price “from £3,370”, the same headline price the dealer showed for its 2026 1 oz Kangaroo that day,
- the stock status “Notify me when back in stock”,
- a note that the design “will be confirmed by the mint closer to launch” and that the image is a placeholder,
- the dealer’s expectation that the coin will be “released in late 2026”.
Is a pre-order a bad idea? Not necessarily. Just remember that you are buying a coin whose design and exact date are not yet public, so read the dealer’s terms on price, payment and cancellation first.
The 2026 Kangaroo: the Best Guide to 2027
Until the mint publishes the 2027 specification, the 2026 coin is the reference point. The Perth Mint lists these details for the Australian Kangaroo 2026 1oz Gold Bullion Coin:
| Specification | Kangaroo 2026, 1 oz gold |
|---|---|
| Gold content | 1.000 troy oz |
| Fineness | 99.99% (24 carat) |
| Minimum gross weight | 31.107 g |
| Maximum diameter and thickness | 32.60 mm and 2.95 mm |
| Face value | 100 Australian dollars |
| Maximum mintage | Unlimited |
| Obverse | Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III |
| Security feature | Micro-laser engraved letter on the reverse |
The 2026 reverse, designed by Neil Hollis, shows two kangaroos leaping across water, with a “40” privy mark for the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget. UK collectors who like anniversary pieces may prefer the 2026 coin for that reason alone.
Forty years in one picture
The Perth Mint dates the start of the Australian Precious Metals Coin Program to 8 August 1985. The Nugget proof coin followed in late 1986 and the bullion version a few months later. In 1989 the nugget artwork gave way to a kangaroo by Stuart Devlin, the designer of Australia’s decimal coins. The mint says the 1 kilo gold coin and the silver and platinum bullion coins still use Devlin’s kangaroo, “while other denominations feature new kangaroo designs annually”.
Neil Vance, General Manager Minted Products at The Perth Mint, summed up the programme in October 2025:
“Its global recognition, artistic integrity, and trusted purity have made it a cornerstone of the international bullion market.”

VAT and Capital Gains Tax on the Kangaroo in the UK
This is where the Kangaroo differs from a coin struck by The Royal Mint. Two rules matter:
- VAT: investment gold coins of at least 90% purity, minted after 1800 and legal tender in their country of origin, are exempt from VAT, as explained in HMRC VAT Notice 701/21. A 99.99% Kangaroo qualifies.
- Capital Gains Tax: HMRC’s Capital Gains Manual CG78305 says that coins which are currency but not sterling, “for example Krugerrands, are chargeable assets”, while Sovereigns and Britannias are exempt as sterling currency.
What does that mean in practice? The Kangaroo is Australian legal tender, not sterling, so it follows the same logic as the Krugerrand: a gain on disposal can be chargeable to CGT. If tax-free gains matter to you, compare it with a Britannia. Silver coins are a different story again, because silver does not get the investment gold VAT exemption.
How Much Does a Gold Kangaroo Cost in the UK?
The 2027 coin has no confirmed shelf price yet. Current Kangaroos do, and they show where the new coin is likely to sit once it is in stock. These were the offers in our UK comparison on 5 October 2026, ranked by the final price including postage:
| Size | Cheapest dealer | Offer | Price incl. postage | Over spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | Tavex | 1oz Australian Kangaroo Gold Coin 2024 | £3,272.29 | 4.4% |
| 1/2 oz | Hatton Garden Metals | 1/2 Oz Gold Australian Nugget (Mixed Years) | £1,682.06 | 7.5% |
| 1/4 oz | Hatton Garden Metals | Best Value 1/4 Oz Australian Nugget | £840.49 | 7.5% |
| 1/10 oz | Hatton Garden Metals | 1/10 Oz Australian Nugget Gold Coin | £351.00 | 12.2% |
Notice that the cheapest 1 oz coin in our data was a 2024 coin, not a 2026 one. For pure gold value the year makes no difference, which is why “mixed years” listings are often the better deal.
Premiums by size
The premium is what you pay above the value of the gold. Premium % = (price paid minus spot value) / spot value × 100. Here is how it scaled with coin size in our UK data:
Are fractional coins worth it? They are easier to sell in small amounts, but you pay more per gram. In our data, the 1/10 oz coin cost almost three times the premium of the 1 oz coin. Our guide to large or small denominations explains the trade-off.
The gold price over the last 90 days
According to our price service, gold peaked at £3,412.50 per ounce on 24 August 2026 and was at £3,131.53 on 5 October 2026. That is a bigger swing than any difference between a 2026 and a 2027 Kangaroo. Track it on our gold price chart.
Should You Wait for the 2027 Kangaroo?
That depends on why you are buying. A quick way to decide:
Wait for 2027 if:
- you collect one Kangaroo a year and want the new reverse,
- you are happy to pre-order and wait for delivery.
Buy a 2026 coin if:
- you like the 40th anniversary privy mark,
- you want the coin in hand now.
Buy mixed years if:
- you simply want gold at the lowest premium,
- the year on the coin does not matter to you.
Consider a Britannia instead if:
- you expect to sell at a gain and want the CGT exemption on sterling coins.
