Key Takeaways
- Release: The Perth Mint’s calendar lists the Australian Kangaroo 2027 Bullion Coin Series for “November 2026 (exact date TBC)” (checked 5 October 2026).
- Not published yet: the launch day, the 2027 design, the sizes and the mintage. Anything else you read is a guess.
- Same gold, new date: if 2027 follows 2026, the 1 oz coin will be 99.99% gold with an A$100 face value, but the mint has not confirmed this yet.
- GST-free: gold of at least 99.5% fineness in investment form counts as precious metal for GST, so a 99.99% Kangaroo is sold without GST.
- Today’s price: the 1 oz Kangaroo in our Australian comparison cost A$6,195 on 5 October 2026, 4.2% over spot, before postage.
The Kangaroo 2027 is the next instalment of what The Perth Mint calls the nation’s signature investment coin series, struck in East Perth. Every year the question is the same: when does the new coin come out, what will it look like and is it worth waiting for? Some of those answers exist already, others do not.
In this guide we stick to what the mint has published, add current prices from our Kangaroo gold coin price comparison and explain the GST and CGT basics for Australian buyers. We also show how much more you pay for the smaller sizes.
When Is the Kangaroo 2027 Released?
The Perth Mint publishes its upcoming launches on the upcoming bullion coin releases page. On 5 October 2026, the 2027 Australian Bullion Program listed “Australian Kangaroo 2027 Bullion Coin Series” with the release date “November 2026 (exact date TBC)”.
Read the small print on that page too:
- new coins are released from 8.30am AWST, which is 11.30am in Sydney and Melbourne on daylight saving time,
- dates are subject to change, and the mint calls the schedule “only a guide”,
- not all sizes will be available at launch, and the mint will advise when the rest are on sale,
- to buy bullion in The Perth Mint Shop you need an in-store account registration.
Can you buy straight from the mint on launch day? Yes, The Perth Mint sells bullion coins online and in its Perth shop. Dealers around the country usually list the coin soon after, often as pre-orders until stock arrives.

Kangaroo 2027: Confirmed Facts vs Unknowns
| Detail | Status on 5 October 2026 | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Release month | Confirmed | November 2026 |
| Exact date | Not announced | “TBC” on the mint’s calendar |
| Reverse design | Not announced | Gold coins get a new kangaroo each year, except the 1 kilo |
| Sizes and metals | Not announced | 2026: gold, silver and platinum |
| Mintage | Not announced | 2026 1 oz gold: unlimited |
| Specifications | Not announced for 2027 | 2026 1 oz gold: 99.99%, minimum 31.107 g |
Why is the design unknown when dealers already show pictures? Because many dealers use placeholder images until the mint publishes the official artwork. Treat any “2027 design” you see before the mint’s announcement with caution.
The 2026 Coin as a Benchmark
The Perth Mint’s product page for the Australian Kangaroo 2026 1oz Gold Bullion Coin lists the following:
| Specification | 2026 Kangaroo, 1 oz gold |
|---|---|
| Gold content | 1.000 troy oz |
| Fineness | 99.99% |
| Minimum gross weight | 31.107 g |
| Maximum diameter | 32.60 mm |
| Maximum thickness | 2.95 mm |
| Monetary denomination | A$100, legal tender in Australia |
| Maximum mintage | Unlimited |
| Effigy | Dan Thorne design of King Charles III |
| Designer (reverse) | Neil Hollis |
| Authentication | Micro-laser engraved letter, visible with a magnifying glass |
The 2026 reverse shows two kangaroos leaping across water, with mountains behind them and a “40” privy mark. The mark celebrates 40 years of the Australian Nugget, the first official Australian legal tender gold coin series. Collectors who like anniversary issues may want to pick one up before the 2027 coin replaces it on dealer shelves.
From Nugget to Kangaroo
According to The Perth Mint, the Australian Precious Metals Coin Program was formally approved on 8 August 1985. The first Nugget proof coin, showing the Welcome Stranger nugget, came out in late 1986, and the bullion coins a few months later. In 1989 the nugget designs were replaced by a kangaroo created by Stuart Devlin. His design lives on in the 1 kilo gold coin and the silver and platinum bullion coins, while the other gold sizes get a new kangaroo every year.
The mint’s Neil Vance looked back on the programme in October 2025:
“As we celebrate 40 years of this iconic program, we honour not only its legacy but also the confidence it continues to inspire in investors around the world.”
Neil Vance, General Manager Minted Products, The Perth Mint, article “40th anniversary kangaroo bullion”, 20 October 2025

GST and CGT on Gold Kangaroos in Australia
Two tax questions come up every time a new Kangaroo is released:
- GST: under the ATO’s ruling GSTR 2003/10, gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form is “precious metal”: it is GST-free when first supplied after refining and input taxed after that, so no GST is added to the price you pay. A 99.99% Kangaroo meets that test.
- CGT: a gain when you sell gold can be a capital gain. If you held the coin for at least 12 months, you may be eligible for the CGT discount.
Does the A$100 face value matter for tax? No, the coin is valued by its gold content, which is worth far more than A$100. Keep your receipt either way, because it records your cost base.
What Does a Gold Kangaroo Cost in Australia Right Now?
The 2027 coin has no price yet. These were the Kangaroo offers in our Australian comparison on 5 October 2026:
| Size | Dealer | Offer | Price | Postage | Over spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | Australian Bullion Company | 1oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin | A$6,195 | Shown at checkout | 4.2% |
| 1/2 oz | Australian Bullion Company | 1/2oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin | A$3,236 | Shown at checkout | 8.9% |
| 1/4 oz | Australian Bullion Company | 1/4oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin | A$1,671 | Shown at checkout | 12.4% |
| 1/10 oz | Australian Bullion Company | 1/10oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin | A$692 | Shown at checkout | 16.4% |
Is one offer enough to call it the cheapest? No, and we will not pretend it is. It is a useful benchmark, but before you buy, compare it with The Perth Mint’s own price and other dealers, and always include postage or collection costs.
Premium by size
The premium is how much you pay above the gold value. The formula: Premium % = (price minus spot value) / spot value × 100.
The pattern is clear: the 1/10 oz coin carried almost four times the premium of the 1 oz coin. Small coins suit gifts and small budgets, but for building a position the 1 oz is far cheaper per gram. Compare the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz pages.
The gold price in Australian dollars
Our price service recorded a 90-day high of A$6,501.10 per ounce on 25 August 2026. On 5 October 2026 gold was at A$5,950.91. Movements like this outweigh any difference between a 2026 and a 2027 coin. Watch it on our gold price chart.
Should You Buy the 2027 Kangaroo or an Older Coin?
Buy the 2027 coin if:

- you want the 40th anniversary privy mark,
