Introduced in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand marked a milestone as the first-ever bullion coin, designed to showcase South Africa’s gold. By 1980, Krugerrands made up 90% of the global market, reflecting their immense popularity. The name is a fusion of ‘Kruger,’ honouring the first Boer president of South Africa, and ‘rand,’ the country’s currency.

Each Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of gold, enriched with copper to enhance its durability and give it a distinctive reddish hue.

The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, while the reverse depicts the springbok, a symbol of South Africa’s natural heritage. Despite being recognised as legal tender, the Krugerrand does not have a set face value.
