Since its debut in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand has held a historic place as the world’s first bullion coin, designed to promote South African gold. By 1980, Krugerrands represented 90% of the global coin market, a testament to their popularity. The name blends ‘Kruger,’ after South Africa’s first Boer president, and ‘rand,’ the national currency.
Each Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of gold with a small addition of copper for increased durability and a unique reddish tone.
The obverse displays a Paul Kruger portrait, while the reverse features a springbok, one of South Africa’s national animals. Although legal tender, the Krugerrand lacks a fixed face value.
