Storage types compared
Bank safe deposit box
A box in a bank vault, open during branch hours. Usually for account holders only, and banks ask you to insure the contents yourself. Few UK banks still offer them.
Private safe deposit company
Independent vaults, often with longer opening hours and basic insurance included. No bank account needed.
Bullion dealer storage
Many dealers store the coins and bars you buy from them in a professional vault, often allocated to you by bar or serial number.
Online bullion storage
You buy and sell online and never visit the vault. Fees are usually a percentage of value. Some keep silver in bonded or overseas vaults.
Gold storage questions
Where can I store gold safely in the UK?
There are five common options: a safe at home, a bank safe deposit box, a box at a private safe deposit company, storage with the bullion dealer you buy from, and online bullion storage in a professional vault. They differ in insurance, access, cost and whether you can collect your coins and bars in person.
Do UK banks still offer safe deposit boxes?
Very few. Barclays, NatWest, HSBC, Santander and most other high street banks have closed their safe deposit services or stopped taking new customers. Metro Bank still rents boxes in its stores, Danske Bank offers them in Northern Ireland, and a few smaller banks have boxes in some branches, usually for account holders only.
Is gold in a safe deposit box insured?
Not automatically. Banks usually say a box is not an alternative to insurance and ask you to insure the contents yourself. Many private safe deposit companies include a basic amount of cover, often around £10,000, and offer more for an extra fee. Check the stated amount before you deposit gold and ask your home insurer too.
How much does a safe deposit box cost in the UK?
Published prices start from about £110 a year (Finchley Safe Deposit Vault) and rise to several hundred pounds a year for larger boxes. Many providers publish prices only on request. The cost table above lists every published price we found.
Can I store silver without paying VAT?
Silver bought in the UK normally carries 20% VAT. Some dealers offer storage in a bonded or overseas vault, where VAT may not be charged while the metal stays there. VAT becomes due if you take delivery in the UK. Each provider’s page shows what it publishes about VAT. We do not give tax advice.
How do I choose a gold storage provider?
Look for a published vault address, a stated insurance amount, clear prices, access hours and the minimum contract term. These are the six points our ranking checks. Also ask how you get your metal back and what collection or delivery costs.
