Banks that no longer offer safe deposit boxes
Barclays, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC, Santander, Bank of Scotland and others have closed their safe deposit or safe custody services or stopped taking new customers. Halifax boxes are not available to new customers. If your bank has closed its boxes, a private safe deposit company or bullion vault storage are the usual alternatives.

Why did banks close their safe deposit boxes?
Banks have reduced branch services and the space and staff needed to run vaults. Many have closed safe deposit or safe custody services altogether and asked customers to empty their boxes.
Are bank safe deposit boxes insured?
Usually not. Banks say a box is not an alternative to insurance and ask you to insure the contents yourself, for example through your home insurance.
