How we calculate the platinum price per gram

We take the spot price of one troy ounce of platinum (31.1035 g) in US dollars and divide it by the weight of the ounce. That gives the price of 1 gram of pure platinum. For lower finenesses we multiply by the metal content: 950 fineness means 95% platinum.

This is the value of the metal alone. A buyer will usually pay you less, and bars and coins in shops cost more, because the dealer premium and minting cost are added on top.

What is platinum used for?

More than half of all platinum goes into industry: catalytic converters for diesel vehicles, the chemical industry and fuel cells. Platinum jewelry is usually 950 fine, while investment bars and coins are 999.5. Most of the world’s supply comes from South Africa.
