What Is the Cheapest Way to Buy Gold in Australia?

Key Takeaways

  • The cheapest way to buy physical gold in Australia is a large, plain piece of bullion: on 14 October 2026, a 1 kg cast bar was listed at 1.4% over spot before delivery, and the cheapest 1 oz Kangaroo cost 4.2% over spot with delivery included.
  • Small sizes cost much more per ounce: the same day, 1/10 oz Kangaroo coins cost between 17.9% and 20.6% over spot once delivery was added.
  • Delivery is part of the price: a A$25 to A$31 shipping fee adds four to five percentage points to a 1/10 oz coin, but only one to one and a half points to a 1 oz coin.
  • If you do not need metal in your hand, ASX gold can be cheaper to hold: The Perth Mint’s PMGOLD charges a 0.15% management fee, plus brokerage.
  • Jewellery is the most expensive way to own gold: you pay for design and labour, and in Australia jewellery is not GST-free precious metal.

What is the cheapest way to buy gold? Most people look at the price tag and pick the lowest number. That is a mistake, because a cheap-looking 1/10 oz coin can cost you far more per gram than a bar that seems expensive. The real cost of gold is the premium over spot, plus delivery, plus what you lose when you sell.

In this guide, we compare real prices from Australian dealers in our gold investment price comparison. You will see which sizes and products were cheapest per ounce, how much delivery adds, how ASX gold compares, and a simple checklist for your next order.

What Does “Cheap” Mean When You Buy Gold?

The spot price is the current market price of one troy ounce of gold for large wholesale trades. No retail buyer pays exactly spot. The difference between what you pay and the value of the gold is called the premium over spot.

So the cheapest gold is not the product with the lowest price. It is the product with the lowest cost per ounce of fine gold. Here is the simple formula we use:

  • Price per ounce = total price (including delivery) ÷ ounces of fine gold
  • Premium % = (price per ounce − spot price) ÷ spot price × 100

Does a 1/10 oz coin at A$700 look cheaper than a 1 oz coin at A$6,200? On the shelf, yes. Per ounce, it is the other way round: ten 1/10 oz coins would cost you more than A$7,000.

The three costs that decide the real price

When you compare offers, add up these three costs:

  1. Premium: the dealer’s margin plus minting, refining and handling costs built into the price.
  2. Delivery and insurance: often a flat fee, so it hurts small orders the most.
  3. The spread when you sell: the gap between the dealer’s sell price and the buy-back price. Our glossary explains the bid-ask spread in more detail.

We cover the first cost in depth in our guide to the gold premium over spot in Australia. This article looks at the whole bill and at the different ways to own gold.

Cheapest Gold by Size: Our Australian Data

We took the gold listings that Australian dealers in our price comparison published on 14 October 2026. For each product, we calculated the price per ounce including delivery and compared it with the AUD spot price of A$5,972.59 per ounce on the same day.

The pattern is clear. The premium falls steeply as the coin gets bigger, and the biggest drop happens between 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz.

1/10 oz gold coins: the most expensive ounce

A 1/10 oz coin is the easiest way to start, because it costs around A$700. But you pay for that convenience. On 14 October 2026, even the cheapest 1/10 oz Kangaroo, sold directly by The Perth Mint, cost 17.9% over spot with delivery. That means roughly one dollar in six went on costs, not on gold.

Small coins still make sense for gifts or for people who want to sell a small amount later. If you just want the most gold for your money, they are the wrong tool. Compare 1/10 oz Kangaroo prices if you still want one.

1/4 oz and 1/2 oz coins: the middle ground

The 1/4 oz coin roughly halved the premium of the 1/10 oz coin, at 10.5% with delivery. The 1/2 oz coin was lower again, at 6.7%. These sizes suit you if your budget is A$1,600 to A$3,200 per purchase and you want to buy regularly.

1 oz gold coins: the sweet spot for most buyers

For most Australian investors, the 1 oz bullion coin is the best balance of price and liquidity. The cheapest 1 oz coin on our list, a Kangaroo from Ainslie Bullion in various years, cost 4.2% over spot with delivery. Imported 99.99% coins such as the Maple Leaf and Britannia were close behind, at 5.1% to 5.3%.

Notice one detail: The Perth Mint’s own 1 oz coin was not the cheapest. Its coin price was competitive, but its A$85.88 delivery fee lifted the total. Buying straight from the mint is not automatically the cheapest option. Compare 1 oz Kangaroo gold coin prices across dealers before you order.

Gold bars: lowest premium per ounce at large sizes

Bars have no face value and usually a simpler design, so they tend to be cheaper to make. On 14 October 2026, Australian Bullion Company listed a 1 kg ABC cast gold bar at A$194,784. That works out at about A$6,058 per ounce, or 1.4% over spot before delivery. Delivery was not listed in our data for this dealer, so the final cost will be a little higher.

Large cast bars are the cheapest gold per ounce, but a 1 kg bar is out of reach for most people, and it has lower liquidity in practice: it is harder to sell in part. You cannot sell half a bar. For smaller budgets, check 1 oz gold bar prices and 100 g gold bar prices, or browse all 1 kg gold bars.

CombiBars: Divisible Gold at a Price

A CombiBar is a thin bar made of small segments, for example 100 pieces of 1 g, that you can snap apart. It sounds like the best of both worlds: one bar to buy, many small pieces to sell. Is it cheap? Our data says it sits in the middle.

Valcambi CombiBar (KJC Bullion) Fine gold Total incl. A$40 delivery Price per ounce Premium over spot
20 x 1 g 20 g A$4,387.83 A$6,824 14.3%
50 x 1 g 50 g A$10,596.11 A$6,592 10.4%
100 x 1 g 100 g A$21,120.08 A$6,569 10.0%
10 x 1/10 oz 1 oz A$6,681.79 A$6,682 11.9%
Source: metalsradar price service, KJC Bullion listings checked 14 October 2026. Premium calculated by metalsradar against the AUD spot price of A$5,972.59 per ounce (14 October 2026).

A 1 oz CombiBar cost 11.9% over spot, while a plain 1 oz Kangaroo cost 4.2%. You pay about seven extra percentage points for the option to split your gold. That is cheaper than buying ten separate 1/10 oz coins, but much dearer than one solid ounce.

Does Delivery Change the Cheapest Option?

Yes, and more than most buyers expect. In our data, delivery for a single item cost between A$24.97 and A$153.22, and the fee grows much more slowly than the value of the order. That makes it a small share of a big order and a big share of a small one.

Order Price Delivery Delivery as % of order Premium before delivery Premium after delivery

What can you do about it? You have three simple options:

  • combine several purchases into one larger order, so one delivery fee covers more gold,
  • check whether the dealer offers free pick-up from a showroom near you,
  • compare the total price, not the product price, every time.

Our gold coin price comparison shows the total cost with delivery wherever the dealer publishes it.

Physical Gold vs ASX Gold: Which Is Cheaper?

Not everyone needs to hold a coin. If your goal is simply exposure to the gold price, you can buy gold-backed products on the ASX through a share broker.

How ASX gold works

An exchange-traded product (ETP) holds gold on behalf of its investors, and you buy and sell units like shares. The Perth Mint says its PMGOLD product has a management fee of 0.15% and that holdings are covered by its government guarantee. PMGOLD can also be converted into a Perth Mint Depository account and redeemed as bullion bars, with fees.

When ASX gold is cheaper

ASX gold usually wins on entry cost. You avoid minting premiums, delivery and storage. Your costs are brokerage when you trade, the bid-ask spread on the exchange and the yearly management fee. For a short or medium holding, that is often less than the premium on a small coin.

When physical gold is cheaper

The management fee is charged every year, while a coin’s premium is paid once. If you plan to hold for many years, the yearly fee keeps adding up. Physical gold also has no counterparty: it does not depend on a broker, fund or platform to keep its promise. Many buyers value that more than a lower fee.

What about gold mining companies?

Shares in gold mining companies are not a cheap way to buy gold. They are a different investment. Their price depends on the company’s costs, debt and management as well as on the gold price, so they can rise or fall much more than gold itself.

So which should you choose? Choose physical gold if you want metal you control and plan to hold for the long term. Choose ASX gold if you want low entry costs, easy trading and no storage worries.

Is Gold Jewellery a Cheap Way to Buy Gold?

No, jewellery is usually the most expensive way to buy gold by weight. You pay for design, labour and the retailer’s margin. Much of that value disappears when you sell, because a buyer will often pay only for the gold content.

There is also a tax difference. Under the ATO’s ruling on precious metals (GSTR 2003/10), gold must be at least 99.5% fine and in investment form to count as GST-free precious metal. Jewellery does not meet that test, so GST applies. Our glossary explains GST on gold and the carat system.

The same rule affects 22 carat coins. A Krugerrand is 91.67% gold, below the 99.5% line. On 14 October 2026, Ainslie Bullion listed its Krugerrand “incl GST” at 13.2% over spot with delivery, about three times the premium of a 1 oz Kangaroo from the same dealer.

How to Buy Gold Cheaply: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Want to pay as little as possible for each gram? Follow these steps before every order:

Step 1: Decide how much you will spend

Your budget decides the size. With A$6,500 or more, a 1 oz coin or bar is usually the cheapest ounce you can buy. With less, consider waiting and buying one larger piece instead of several small ones.

Step 2: Choose plain bullion, not collector pieces

Bullion coins and bars are priced close to the gold they contain. Proofs, coloured coins and limited editions carry extra premiums for rarity. Our glossary explains how numismatic coins differ from bullion.

Step 3: Stick to 99.99% gold from known mints

High-purity coins and bars from mints such as The Perth Mint are GST-free when they meet the 99.5% test and are easy to sell. Check the fineness on the listing.

Step 4: Compare the total, not the sticker price

Add delivery to every offer and divide by the ounces of gold. Our list of Australian dealers and comparison pages do this for you.

Step 5: Check the buy-back price

Ask what the dealer would pay you for the same item today. A slightly higher premium with a strong buy-back can work out cheaper over the full life of your purchase.

Step 6: Plan where you will keep it

A safe at home, a safe deposit box or a vault all have different costs. Read our guide on the proper way to store gold before you buy.

Common Mistakes That Make Gold Expensive

Most overpaying comes from a few habits:

  • buying many 1/10 oz coins instead of one 1 oz coin,
  • ignoring delivery and insurance until the checkout page,
  • paying collector premiums for coins you will later sell as bullion,
  • buying jewellery as an investment,
  • buying in a rush when prices jump, without comparing dealers.

Watch the gold price chart in AUD to see where the market is before you buy. Trying to time the market perfectly rarely works, but premiums can widen when demand suddenly jumps.
