Specifications
About this product
A 1oz gold bar from the Perth Mint is one of the most familiar bullion products in Australia. It holds one troy ounce of fine gold, carries the Perth Mint stamp and is sold by most Australian bullion dealers. This page compares what dealers ask for it today, so you can see the real final price side by side before you buy.
What is the Perth Mint 1oz gold bar?
The Perth Mint in Western Australia has been refining and minting precious metals since 1899 and is owned by the Government of Western Australia. Its 1oz gold bars come in two main styles:
- Cast bar: molten gold is poured into a mould, which gives the bar its rough, slightly uneven surface.
- Minted bar: the bar is struck from a blank, so it has sharp edges, a polished face and a more detailed design.
Both styles contain the same amount of gold. The difference is the finish and usually a small difference in premium. Dealers on this page may list either style, so check the product name in the offer before you order.

Who is this bar for?
Is one ounce the right size for you? For many Australian buyers it is the sweet spot between flexibility and cost:
- First time gold buyers who want a well known brand that any Australian dealer will recognise when you sell.
- Investors adding to a holding month by month, one ounce at a time.
- Buyers who want a lower premium per gram than small bars of 1 g to 20 g, without tying up as much money as a 10oz or kilo bar.
What to check before you buy
How much are you really paying above the spot price? The price per piece is only part of the answer. Before you order, compare these points:
- Premium over spot: compare the final price with the value of the gold inside the bar. Our article on the gold premium over spot in Australia shows what is normal.
- Shipping and insurance: some dealers add insured delivery, others offer free shipping above a threshold or pick up in store.
- Cast or minted: make sure the offer you pick is the style you want.
- Authenticity: buy from established dealers, keep the packaging and any certificate, and learn the basic checks in our guide on how to spot fakes.
- Storage: plan where the bar will live. See our tips on storing gold safely.
GST and tax in Australia
Gold of at least 99.5% fineness in investment form counts as a precious metal for GST purposes, so a private buyer pays no GST on this bar. When you sell, any gain is generally a capital gain, and Australian residents who held the metal for at least 12 months can usually apply the 50% CGT discount. Our page on tax on gold in Australia has a calculator and links to the ATO rules. Check your own case with a tax adviser.
Perth Mint bar or another 1oz gold bar?
The Perth Mint is not the only refiner selling one ounce bars in Australia. Swiss bars such as the 1oz Gold Bar Valcambi and the 1oz Gold Bar PAMP Fortuna hold the same amount of gold. The Perth Mint bar is a local product, which some buyers prefer when they plan to sell back to an Australian dealer. You can compare all of them in the 1 oz gold bars category.
Would a coin suit you better? A one ounce gold coin such as the Kangaroo is legal tender and often carries a slightly higher premium than a bar of the same weight. Our guide to the cheapest way to buy gold in Australia compares bars and coins.

How we rank
When every dealer publishes shipping, we sort by total price (product price plus shipping). If any dealer does not, we sort by product price so nobody benefits from missing information; we show the total wherever we know it. The premium is the amount paid above the metal value at the spot price. Nobody pays for a higher position.
Prices are updated automatically from dealer product feeds. Final price, shipping and availability are confirmed by the dealer.
