What Is the Minimum Amount to Invest in Gold in the UAE?

Key Takeaways

  • The minimum amount to invest in gold in the UAE is the price of the smallest product you can buy: on 22 October 2026, a 1 g PAMP bar cost AED 550.49 at the cheapest UAE dealer we track.
  • Small pieces carry big markups. That 1 g bar cost 13.9% above the gold spot price, while a 10 g bar cost only 3.6% above spot.
  • From about AED 5,000, your money works much harder: 10 g, 50 g and 100 g bars and 1 oz bars all sat between 1.7% and 3.6% above spot.
  • Fractional coins (1/10 oz to 1/2 oz) start at about AED 1,735 and carry premiums of 7.8% to 19.0%, so they cost more per gram than small bars of similar weight.
  • Investment gold of at least 99% purity is zero-rated for VAT in the UAE, so the entry price is not inflated by tax.

Many people in the UAE think you need a large sum to start investing in gold. You don’t. The minimum amount to invest in gold is simply the price of the smallest bar or coin a dealer will sell you, and in the UAE that is a few hundred dirhams.

The real question is a different one: at what budget does a small purchase stop being expensive? In this guide, we answer it with live prices from UAE dealers tracked by our gold price comparison. We look at the cheapest entry products, what each budget buys, and how to build a position step by step.

Is There a Minimum Amount to Invest in Gold?

No, there is no fixed minimum. Gold is sold by weight, so your entry point depends on the smallest piece on offer and its price on the day you buy.

In practice, you will meet three thresholds:

  • the price of a 1 g bar, the smallest investment bar most UAE dealers list,
  • the price of a 1/10 oz bullion coin, the smallest common coin,
  • the budget at which the premium drops to a few percent, which is where gold starts to make sense as a long-term holding.

All three move with the spot price of gold. On 22 October 2026, spot was AED 15,026.40 per troy ounce, or AED 483.11 per gram, according to the Metals Radar price service. Every premium in this article is measured against that figure.

What Is the Premium Over Spot and Why Does It Matter for Small Budgets?

The premium over spot is what you pay above the value of the gold itself. It covers refining, minting, packaging, shipping and the dealer’s margin. We calculate it like this:

Premium % = (price per gram − spot price per gram) / spot price per gram × 100

Many of those costs are fixed per piece. Minting a 1 g bar takes almost as much work as minting a 10 g bar, but the cost is spread over ten times less gold. That is why the smallest products always carry the highest premiums.

Why should this worry a beginner? Because the premium is a loss you need to earn back. If you pay 14% above spot, gold has to rise by about 14% before your bar is worth what you paid at spot value.

The Cheapest Ways to Start: Gold Prices by Size (October 2026)

Here is the entry ladder for physical gold in the UAE. We picked the cheapest listing for each size from the dealers we track and sorted the table by price per piece.

Product Dealer Price (AED) Price per gram (AED) Premium over spot
PAMP 1 g gold bar igold.ae 550.49 550.49 13.9%
Krugerrand 1/10 oz coin igold.ae 1,734.88 557.78 15.5%

The jump between 1 g and 10 g is the most striking line in the table. For about nine times the money, the premium falls from 13.9% to 3.6%. Above that level, extra size brings only small savings.

1 gram gold bar price in the UAE

A 1 g bar is the lowest entry ticket. On 22 October 2026, the same PAMP 1 g bar cost AED 550.49 at igold.ae and AED 599.20 at FK Jewellers, a premium of 13.9% and 24.0%. That is a gap of AED 48.71 on a single gram. Compare live offers for 1 gram gold bars before you buy.

5 g and 10 g gold bars

A 10 g bar is where small budgets start to get fair pricing. The PAMP 10 g bar at igold.ae cost AED 500.30 per gram, only 3.6% above spot. If you can wait until you have about AED 5,000, you will get roughly 10% more gold per dirham than with ten separate 1 g bars. See current 10 gram gold bars and 5 gram gold bars.

20 g, 50 g and 1 oz gold bars

Mid-size bars are not always cheaper per gram, so check each listing. The Valcambi 20 g bar at FK Jewellers carried a 13.1% premium, more than the 10 g bar. At the same dealer, a PAMP 1 oz bar cost 2.0% above spot while a Valcambi 1 oz bar cost 12.0%. Size helps, but the dealer and the brand matter just as much. Browse 20 gram, 50 gram and 1 oz gold bars.

Fractional Gold Coins: Small but Not Cheap

Fractional coins are bullion coins that contain a part of a troy ounce, usually 1/10, 1/4 or 1/2 oz. They are issued by government mints and are easy to recognise and resell. But do they make sense for a small budget?

Coin Fine gold Price (AED) Premium over spot
Krugerrand 1/10 oz (2024) 3.11 g 1,734.88 15.5%
Britannia 1/10 oz (2025) 3.11 g 1,735.55 15.5%
American Eagle 1/10 oz (2024) 3.11 g 1,781.78 18.6%
Maple Leaf 1/10 oz (2025) 3.11 g 1,788.40 19.0%
Britannia 1/4 oz (2025) 7.78 g 4,194.34 11.7%
Maple Leaf 1/4 oz (2024) 7.78 g 4,258.21 13.4%
Maple Leaf 1/2 oz (2025) 15.55 g 8,102.01 7.8%
Britannia 1/2 oz (2025) 15.55 g 8,347.02 11.1%
Krugerrand 1 oz (2022) 31.10 g 15,783.84 5.0%

The answer is: only if you value the coin format. A 1/10 oz coin holds about three times the gold of a 1 g bar, yet its premium was slightly higher. A 10 g bar beat every fractional coin on price per gram.

Coins still have their place. They are popular gifts, they carry a government guarantee of weight and purity, and some buyers like owning recognised pieces such as the Krugerrand or the Britannia. Just know that you pay for that. Our list of the cheapest gold coins shows which coins carry the lowest premium today.

What Can You Buy With Your Budget?

Here is a simple way to think about it. Find your budget in the left column and see the most efficient way to spend it, based on prices from 22 October 2026.

Budget (AED) What it buys Gold you get Premium paid
600 One 1 g bar 1 g 13.9%
2,000 One 1/10 oz coin or three 1 g bars 3.11 g or 3 g 13.9% to 15.5%
5,000 to 6,000 One 10 g bar 10 g 3.6%
15,500 to 16,000 One 1 oz bar or one 1 oz coin 31.10 g 2.0% to 5.0%
25,000 One 50 g bar 50 g 2.3%
50,000 One 100 g bar 100 g 1.7%

See the pattern? Once you reach about AED 5,000, buying more gold barely changes the premium. Below that level, every purchase carries a double-digit markup.

Should You Start Small or Save Up First?

Both approaches can work. It depends on your habits more than on maths.

Start with 1 g bars if:

  • you want to begin today and learn how buying and storing gold works,
  • you would otherwise spend the money,
  • you plan to give small pieces as gifts.

Save up for a 10 g bar if:

  • you can put money aside each month without touching it,
  • you want the most gold for your dirhams,
  • you see gold as a long-term holding of several years.

One middle path: save in your bank account for eight to ten months, then buy a 10 g bar in one go. You avoid paying a 14% premium every month and still build a habit.

Buying Gold Regularly: What 12 Months of Data Show

Some investors prefer to buy a fixed amount every month. This spreads purchases over time, so you never put all your money in at the highest price. How did that play out over the last year?

Gold spot price in AED per gram, 22 October 2025 to 22 October 2026 450 500 550 600 650 22 Oct 2025 22 Jan 22 Apr 22 Jul 22 Oct 2026 AED 644.60 (29 Jan 2026) AED 483.11
Gold spot price in AED per gram, 22 October 2025 to 22 October 2026. Source: Metals Radar price service.

Over the 12 months to 22 October 2026, the price of a gram of gold in AED moved between AED 466.91 (28 October 2025) and AED 644.60 (29 January 2026), according to the Metals Radar price service. It finished the period at AED 483.11, close to where it started (AED 482.62 on 22 October 2025).

Suppose you had put AED 500 into gold on the 22nd of every month from October 2025 to October 2026, 13 purchases in total:

  • you would have spent AED 6,500,
  • at spot prices you would have collected about 12.48 g of gold,
  • your average cost would have been AED 521.05 per gram,
  • on 22 October 2026, that gold was worth about AED 6,027 at spot.

So regular buying did not protect against a falling price this year. What it did do was keep you from buying everything at the January peak, when a gram cost AED 644.60. This example uses spot prices only. Real purchases would add the dealer premium on top, which is another reason to buy in larger pieces less often.

Other Ways to Invest in Gold With a Small Amount

Physical gold is not the only way to get exposure to gold. If your budget is very small, you may come across other options:

  • Gold ETFs: exchange-traded funds that track the price of gold and trade like shares, so you can buy a single unit through a brokerage account.
  • Gold mining stocks: shares in companies that dig gold out of the ground, which often move with the gold price but also carry company risk.
  • Gold accounts and digital gold: products from banks and apps that let you buy gold in small amounts without taking delivery.

Each of these can lower the minimum amount to invest in gold. But none of them is the same as holding a bar or coin. With a fund, a share or an account, you rely on a company or a bank to keep its promise. Physical gold has no counterparty, which is why many buyers see it as a store of value rather than a trade. Fees, minimums and rules differ by provider, so read the terms before you sign up.

Is There VAT on Small Gold Bars in the UAE?

No, not on investment gold. The UAE introduced VAT on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%, according to the UAE Ministry of Finance. Investment precious metals are treated differently.

Under Article 36 of the VAT Executive Regulation published by the Federal Tax Authority, the supply of investment precious metals is zero-rated. This covers gold, silver and platinum with a purity of 99% or more, in a form tradable on global bullion markets. A 1 g PAMP bar of 999.9 fine gold qualifies just like a 1 kg bar.

What about gold jewellery? Jewellery made of 22 or 21 karat gold is below the 99% purity threshold, so it does not qualify as investment gold. Jewellery prices also include making charges, which you will not get back when you sell. Read more in our glossary entry on VAT on gold.

Is Silver a Cheaper Way to Start?

Silver has a much lower entry price per piece. On 22 October 2026, an Emirates 100 g silver bar cost AED 853.30 at FK Jewellers, and a 1 oz Vienna Philharmonic silver coin cost AED 299.40 at igold.ae.

Product Dealer Price (AED) Premium over spot
Vienna Philharmonic 1 oz silver coin igold.ae 299.40 44.3%
Emirates 100 g silver bar FK Jewellers 853.30 28.0%
PAMP 1 g gold bar igold.ae 550.49 13.9%
PAMP 10 g gold bar igold.ae 5,002.97 3.6%

Cheaper to start, yes. Cheaper per unit of value, no. Small silver products carried far higher premiums than small gold bars, because the fixed costs of making each piece weigh more on a cheap metal. Silver also tends to move more sharply than gold. We compare the two forms of silver in detail in our article on silver bars or coins in the UAE.

Tips for Your First Gold Purchase

Ready to buy your first piece? These steps will help you avoid the most common beginner mistakes.

  1. Compare dealers for the same product: the same 1 g PAMP bar cost AED 48.71 more at one UAE dealer than at another on the same day.
  2. Look at the premium, not just the price: a cheaper piece can still be the more expensive way to buy gold.
  3. Stick to known refiners: PAMP and Valcambi bars are on the London Bullion Market Association list of accredited refiners, which you can check on the LBMA Good Delivery list.
  4. Keep the packaging and invoice: a sealed card and a receipt make reselling easier.
  5. Ask about buy-back before you buy: the bid-ask spread decides how much you lose if you sell soon.
  6. Plan your storage: a small bar is easy to lose, so keep it in a safe place from day one.

FAQ: Minimum Amount to Invest in Gold

What is the minimum amount to invest in gold in the UAE?

The minimum amount to invest in gold in the UAE is the price of a 1 g bar. On 22 October 2026, the cheapest 1 g PAMP bar we tracked cost AED 550.49.

What is the 1 gram gold price in the UAE?

On 22 October 2026, the spot price of 24 carat gold was AED 483.11 per gram. A 1 g investment bar cost between AED 550.49 and AED 599.20 at the UAE dealers we track.

Is a 1 gram gold bar a good investment?

A 1 gram gold bar is a good way to start, but not the cheapest way to own gold. Its premium was 13.9% or more, against 3.6% for a 10 g bar.

Can I invest AED 1,000 in gold?

Yes, AED 1,000 buys one 1 g gold bar with change left over. You could also save it towards a 10 g bar, which carries a much lower premium.

Which is better for a small budget, gold bars or gold coins?

Small gold bars are better for price per gram, because a 10 g bar cost less per gram than every fractional coin we tracked. Coins are better if you value recognition or plan to give gold as a gift.

Do I pay VAT on a small gold bar in the UAE?

No, gold bars of at least 99% purity in a form traded on bullion markets are zero-rated for VAT as investment precious metals, whatever their size.

How much gold should a beginner buy?

There is no single right amount, but many beginners start with a piece they can afford without stretching their budget. Buying in steps of 10 g or more keeps premiums low.

Compare Gold Prices Before Your First Purchase

With a small budget, every dirham of premium counts. The same bar can cost noticeably more at one dealer than at another, so a quick comparison often saves more than any market timing.
