How we calculate the gold price per gram

We take the spot price of one troy ounce of gold (31.1035 g) in UAE dirhams and divide it by the weight of the ounce. That gives the price of 1 gram of pure gold. For lower finenesses we multiply by the metal content: 585 fineness means 58.5% gold.

This is the value of the metal alone. A buyer will usually pay you less, and bars and coins in shops cost more, because the dealer premium and minting cost are added on top.

Gold fineness in jewellery and bullion

Gold jewellery is commonly 9K (375), 14K (585), 18K (750) or 22K (916). Investment bars and many bullion coins are 999.9 fine, while some coins, such as the Krugerrand and the Sovereign, are 916.7 (22 karat). When you sell scrap gold, you are paid for the weight of the pure gold, which is why fineness matters so much.

Why does a gram of gold cost more at a dealer?

A dealer sells a finished product: a bar or a coin. On top of the metal value come the premium, the minting cost and, depending on the metal and country, taxes. The smaller the product, the higher the premium per gram.
