Key Takeaways
- Bars give you more silver for your dirhams: on 15 October 2026, silver bars at the UAE dealers we track cost 14.1% to 29.5% above spot, while 1 oz bullion coins cost 45.4% to 59.1% above spot.
- Size matters more than shape: a 500 g cast bar carried the lowest premium in our data, a 100 g bar about double that.
- Coins win on flexibility: they are easy to recognise, easy to split into small sales and carry a mint guarantee of weight and purity.
- VAT is not the deciding factor: investment silver of at least 99% purity in a form traded on bullion markets is zero-rated for VAT in the UAE.
- A sensible mix works for many buyers: large bars for the core of your holding, a handful of 1 oz coins for liquidity.
If you are about to buy physical silver in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, you will quickly face one question: silver bars or coins? Both hold the same metal. Yet the price you pay per ounce can differ by a third or more, depending on what you pick and where you buy it.
In this guide, we compare silver bars and coins using real prices from UAE dealers tracked by our precious metals price comparison. We look at premiums, VAT, storage, resale and the situations in which each option makes sense.
Silver Bars vs Coins: The Short Answer
For most buyers who want the most silver for their money, bars are the better choice. For buyers who value flexibility, recognition and the option to sell in small pieces, coins are worth their higher price.
Here is the difference in one sentence: with bars you pay less for the metal, with coins you pay more for convenience and trust. Which matters more to you?
- Choose bars if your goal is to hold as many ounces as possible for the long term.
- Choose coins if you expect to sell part of your silver, give it as a gift or want instantly recognisable pieces.
- Choose both if your budget allows a core holding plus a few liquid pieces.
What Is the Premium Over Spot?
The premium over spot is the amount you pay above the market value of the metal itself. The spot price is the price of one troy ounce of silver for immediate delivery on the wholesale market. Think of spot as the raw ingredient and the premium as the cost of turning it into a finished product, shipping it and selling it to you.
We calculate it like this:
Premium % = (price per troy ounce − spot price) / spot price × 100
On 15 October 2026, the spot price of silver was AED 206.16 per troy ounce, or about AED 6.63 per gram, according to the Metals Radar price service. Every price in this article is compared with that figure.
Why does the premium matter so much with silver? Silver is cheap per ounce, so fixed costs like minting, packaging and logistics weigh far more heavily on each ounce than they do with gold. A premium that would look small on a gold bar can be huge on a silver coin.
Silver Bar Prices in the UAE (October 2026)
Silver bars are rectangular pieces of refined silver, usually 999 fine, stamped with the refiner’s name, weight and purity. In the UAE, the bars we track come mostly from Emirates Gold, sold by igold.ae and FK Jewellers in 100 g, 250 g and 500 g sizes.
| Bar | Dealer | Price (AED) | Price per oz (AED) | Premium over spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emirates 500 g cast bar | igold.ae | 3,782.36 | 235.29 | 14.1% |
| Emirates 250 g cast bar | igold.ae | 1,963.68 | 244.31 | 18.5% |
| Emirates 500 g bar | FK Jewellers | 4,116.10 | 256.05 | 24.2% |
| Emirates 250 g bar | FK Jewellers | 2,082.40 | 259.08 | 25.7% |
| Emirates 100 g bar | FK Jewellers | 854.60 | 265.81 | 28.9% |
| Emirates 100 g bar | igold.ae | 858.28 | 266.96 | 29.5% |
Two patterns stand out. First, the larger the bar, the lower the premium. Second, the same size can cost very different amounts at two dealers: the 500 g bar was 10.1 percentage points cheaper at one seller than at the other.
100 g silver bars
A 100 g bar holds about 3.2 troy ounces. It is the entry point for silver bars in the UAE and costs under AED 900, but it carried the highest bar premium in our data, close to 30%. Compare current offers in our 100 g silver bars category.
250 g silver bars
A 250 g bar holds just over 8 troy ounces. Premiums ranged from 18.5% to 25.7%, so this size already brings a clear saving compared with 100 g. See the 250 g silver bars on offer.
500 g and 1 kg silver bars
A 500 g bar holds about 16 troy ounces and was the cheapest silver per ounce we found in the UAE on 15 October 2026. Kilo bars usually push premiums lower still, but none of the dealers we track listed a 1 kg bar with a live price that day. You can check the 500 g silver bars and 1 kg silver bars categories for new offers.
Silver Coin Prices in the UAE (October 2026)
Bullion coins are minted by government mints, carry a face value as legal tender and guarantee a set weight of fine silver. The best-known 1 oz silver coins are the Austrian Philharmonic, the South African Krugerrand, the American Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf and the British Britannia.
| Coin (1 oz) | Mint | Price (AED) | Premium over spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna Philharmonic 2024 | Austrian Mint | 299.74 | 45.4% |
| Krugerrand 2024 | South African Mint | 320.74 | 55.6% |
| American Eagle 2024 | United States Mint | 328.09 | 59.1% |
We left a few coins out of this table on purpose. Maple Leaf and Britannia listings showed premiums above 100%, which may reflect outdated prices or collector demand rather than the normal bullion market. Lunar and Kangaroo coins with a specific year often trade as semi-collectibles, so they are not a fair comparison either.
Vienna Philharmonic silver coin
The Philharmonic is struck by the Austrian Mint in 999 fine silver with a face value of 1.50 euros. It was the cheapest 1 oz silver coin in our UAE data. Compare live offers for the Vienna Philharmonic silver coin.
Krugerrand silver coin
The silver Krugerrand, issued by the South African Mint since 2017, follows the design of the famous gold Krugerrand. It sat in the middle of our price range. See current Krugerrand silver coin prices.
American Silver Eagle
The American Eagle is one of the best-known silver bullion coins in the world and is struck in 999 fine silver by the United States Mint. In the UAE it carried the highest premium of the three coins. Compare American Eagle silver coin offers.
Premiums Side by Side
The chart below puts every product on one scale. The gap between the most expensive bar and the cheapest coin is bigger than the whole range between the cheapest and the dearest bar.
What does that mean in practice? Say you have AED 10,000 to put into silver:
- In 500 g cast bars at AED 235.29 per ounce, you would get about 42.5 troy ounces.
- In Vienna Philharmonics at AED 299.74 each, you would get about 33.4 troy ounces.
- In American Eagles at AED 328.09 each, you would get about 30.5 troy ounces.
That is roughly 27% more silver with the cheapest bar than with the cheapest coin. Put another way, 16 Philharmonics cost AED 4,795.84, while one 500 g bar, holding slightly more silver, cost AED 3,782.36. The difference was just over AED 1,000.
Bars vs Coins: Full Comparison
Price is only one part of the decision. Here is how bars and coins compare on the other points that matter to UAE buyers.
| Factor | Silver bars | Silver coins |
|---|---|---|
| Premium over spot (UAE, 15 Oct 2026) | 14.1% to 29.5% | 45.4% to 59.1% |
| Issuer | Private refiner | Government mint |
| Legal tender | No | Yes, with a symbolic face value |
| Typical purity | 999 | 999 or 9999 |
| Sizes | 100 g to 1 kg and larger | Mostly 1 oz |
| Recognition when selling | Good for known refiners | Very high worldwide |
| Selling in small portions | Harder, one bar is one sale | Easy, sell one coin at a time |
| Storage space per ounce | Compact | Bulkier, often in tubes |
| Counterfeit protection | Varies by refiner | Mint security features on many coins |
Why Are Silver Coins More Expensive Than Bars?
Coins cost more per ounce because each one takes more work to make and sell. A mint has to strike a detailed design on both sides of every coin, often with security features, and then pack it in tubes or capsules.
Several costs add up:
- minting a 1 oz coin costs far more per ounce than casting a 500 g bar,
- government mints sell to distributors at their own premium,
- shipping coins from Austria, South Africa or the United States to the UAE adds freight and insurance,
- demand for popular coins can push dealer premiums up when supply is tight.
Cast bars are the opposite case. Molten silver is poured into a mould, cooled and stamped. That is why the two cheapest products in our data were both cast bars.
Is VAT Different for Silver Bars and Coins in the UAE?
Usually not. The UAE introduced VAT on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%, according to the UAE Ministry of Finance. Investment precious metals are treated differently.
Under Article 36 of the VAT Executive Regulation published by the Federal Tax Authority, the supply of investment precious metals is zero-rated. This covers gold, silver and platinum with a purity of 99% or more, in a form tradable on global bullion markets. Standard 999 silver bars and bullion coins are made for that market.
Does that mean you will never pay VAT on silver? No. Sterling silver jewellery and decorative items fall below the 99% threshold and normally carry standard VAT. If you buy a coin in a gift set or a decorative frame, check the invoice. Our glossary entry on VAT on gold explains the same rules for gold.
Selling Silver: Bars or Coins?
Buying is only half of the trade. Sooner or later, you may want to sell, and that is where coins earn back part of their higher premium.
Here is why:
- A dealer can check a well-known 1 oz coin in seconds against mint specifications.
- You can sell one coin at a time instead of a whole 500 g bar.
- Coins are recognised by dealers across the world, not just in the UAE.
Bars from established refiners usually sell without trouble in the UAE too, but a single large bar is all or nothing. If you need AED 1,000 quickly, selling a 500 g bar means selling far more than you need.
Keep in mind the bid-ask spread: the gap between the price a dealer sells at and the price they buy back at. Our data covers dealer selling prices only, so ask your dealer for a buy-back quote before you buy.
Silver Price Moves Change the Maths
Silver is a volatile metal. On 18 September 2026, the spot price reached AED 244.43 per ounce. By 15 October 2026 it had fallen to AED 206.16, a drop of about 15.7% in less than a month, according to the Metals Radar price service.
Why does this matter for bars vs coins? Your premium is a cost you need to earn back before you break even. With a 14.1% premium, silver needs to rise by 14.1% for the metal value to match what you paid. With a 59.1% premium, it needs to rise by 59.1%, before you even count the dealer’s buy-back spread.
Dealer prices also do not always follow spot instantly. When spot falls quickly, as it did in October 2026, premiums measured on that day may look higher than usual. Checking prices on more than one day gives you a fairer picture. Follow the silver price chart in AED or the silver price per gram before you buy.
Who Should Buy Silver Bars?
Bars suit buyers who think in ounces and years, not in days.
Choose silver bars if:
- you want the lowest price per ounce,
- you plan to hold for many years,
- you have a budget of AED 4,000 or more, so 250 g and 500 g bars are within reach,
- you have safe storage, at home in a safe or in a vault,
- you are comfortable selling in larger blocks.
Tips for buying silver bars in the UAE
- Compare the same bar size across dealers, as the gap in our data reached over 10 percentage points.
- Go for the largest size you can afford without stretching your budget.
- Keep the original packaging and invoice, which helps when you sell.
- Ask whether the bar is cast or minted, as cast bars are often cheaper.
Who Should Buy Silver Coins?
Coins suit buyers who value options.
Choose silver coins if:
- you want to sell in small amounts over time,
- you value a government guarantee of weight and purity,
- you buy silver as a gift for family or friends,
- you may travel or move abroad and want pieces recognised everywhere,
- you start with a small budget and add one coin at a time.
Tips for buying silver coins in the UAE
- Stick to mainstream bullion coins such as the Philharmonic, Krugerrand or Eagle.
- Avoid paying extra for a specific year unless you collect coins.
- Check the premium, not just the price, because two coins at a similar price can hold the same silver with very different markups.
- Store coins in tubes or capsules to protect them from scratches and tarnish.

Can You Combine Bars and Coins?
Yes, and many investors do. A simple split is to put most of your budget into large bars for the lowest cost per ounce and keep a smaller part in 1 oz coins for flexibility.
For example, with AED 10,000 you could buy two 500 g cast bars for AED 7,564.72 and eight Vienna Philharmonics for AED 2,397.92, based on prices from 15 October 2026. You would hold about 40.2 troy ounces and keep eight pieces you can sell one by one.
The same logic works with gold. Read our guide to the cheapest way to buy gold in the UAE.
