Specifications
About this product
A 1 kg silver bar at 999 fineness contains 1,000 g of pure silver, about 32.15 troy ounces. It is the standard large silver unit in India: the IBJA publishes its daily silver rate per kilogram, so a 1 kg bar is the easiest silver product to value against the market. Indian refiners and jewellers sell 1 kg bars under their own brand, and metalsradar compares those of the same weight and purity in one list.
Why buyers choose a kilo bar
For holding silver as metal, a 1 kg bar usually carries a lower making charge per gram than small coins. In the offers we tracked, kilo bars were priced lower per gram than 10 g silver coins at the same seller. The trade-offs are size and flexibility: a kilo bar is one piece, so you cannot sell part of it.
Price structure
- Metal value: 1 kg of silver at the day’s rate, which you can compare directly with the IBJA rate.
- Making or minting charge: set by each seller.
- GST: 3% on both.
IBJA rates exclude GST and making charges, so the shop price will always be above the published figure. At this value a small difference in premium is a noticeable sum, so compare offers on the same day. Our silver price chart shows how the rate has moved.
Practical points before you buy
- Purity and markings: check that the bar is stamped 999 and that the weight, maker and any serial number match the invoice.
- Delivery: confirm delivery cost and insurance in transit at checkout.
- Storage: a kilo of silver is heavier and bulkier than gold of the same value. Plan space in a safe or locker, and check whether your insurance covers bullion.
- Tarnish: silver darkens in air. A sealed wrap or airtight bag slows this; avoid abrasive cleaning.
- Buyback: read the seller’s written buyback or exchange terms, and keep the invoice with the bar.
Silver alongside gold
Some buyers hold a kilo bar as a lower-cost complement to gold. Silver prices tend to move more sharply than gold, in both directions. Our gold-silver ratio chart shows how many grams of silver one gram of gold has bought over time.
Frequently asked questions
How many troy ounces is a 1 kg silver bar?
About 32.15 troy ounces.
How does a 1 kg bar compare with the IBJA silver rate?
IBJA quotes silver per kilogram without GST and making charges. The shop price adds both, so it is always higher.
Is a 1 kg silver bar cheaper per gram than silver coins?
Usually yes, because the making charge is spread over much more metal. Compare current offers on this page.
What should I check when a kilo bar is delivered?
Check the 999 stamp, the weight, the maker and any serial number against the invoice, and keep the bar in its wrap.
