Key Takeaways
- Neither metal is “better” for everyone: gold suits investors who want a steadier store of value, silver suits those who accept bigger swings for a chance of bigger gains.
- Silver moved more than twice as much as gold: over the year to 2 October 2026, silver’s annualised volatility in AUD was 39.2%, gold’s 17.3%.
- Silver also fell much harder: from the January 2026 peak, silver dropped 51.7% at its lowest point, gold 25.9%.
- Silver costs more to buy and store: at one Australian dealer, a 1 oz gold Kangaroo cost 3.6% over spot, while 1 oz silver coins cost 15.5% or more. Perth Mint allocated storage costs 1% a year for gold and 1.9% for silver.
- Tax rules are similar: no GST on investment-grade gold (99.5%+) or silver (99.9%+), and gains on both are subject to capital gains tax.
Gold vs silver investment is one of the oldest debates among Australian bullion buyers. Gold has the reputation of a safe haven. Silver is cheaper per ounce, more volatile and tied to industry. Both are sold by every Australian bullion dealer, both are free of GST in investment form, and both can lose value. Most people start investing in precious metals to diversify an investment portfolio or as a hedge against economic uncertainty. So which one belongs in your portfolio?
In this guide, we compare the two metals using a full year of AUD spot prices from our precious metals price comparison, real dealer listings, ATO tax rules and Perth Mint storage fees. You will see how each metal behaves, what it costs to own and a simple “choose gold if / choose silver if” checklist at the end.
Gold vs Silver: The Short Answer
Here is the quick version for Australian investors:
- Want stability and low costs? Gold had smaller price swings and lower premiums in our data, and it is far cheaper to store per dollar invested.
- Comfortable with big swings? Silver rose more over the past year (22.4% vs 2.2% in AUD), but it also lost half its value from peak to trough along the way.
- Small budget? A 1 oz silver coin costs about A$100, a 1 oz gold coin about A$6,000. Fractional gold coins exist, but their premiums are high.
- Can’t decide? Many investors hold both, with gold as the larger core and silver as a smaller, higher-risk part.
Is silver a better investment than gold right now? Nobody can know that in advance, and the past year shows how quickly the answer can change. Before you invest in gold or silver, write down your investment goals: how long you plan to hold, how much you can afford to see fall, and whether you need to sell quickly.
How Gold and Silver Differ as Investments
Gold and silver are both precious metals, traded per troy ounce and quoted around the clock. The main difference is where their demand comes from.
Gold: mostly a monetary and investment metal
Most gold demand comes from jewellery, investors and central banks. Industry uses only a small share. According to the World Gold Council, central banks added a net 289 tonnes of gold to their reserves in the second quarter of 2026, up 62% year-on-year, while bar and coin investment fell just 3%. That steady official buying is one reason gold is considered a store of value, and why it often holds up better than shares in periods of economic uncertainty, although not every time.
Gold’s lack of industrial use is also the core of the best-known argument against it. Warren Buffett put it this way:
“Gold, however, has two significant shortcomings, being neither of much use nor procreative.”
Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, letter to shareholders for 2011, February 2012
Silver: more than half industrial
Silver is a precious metal and an industrial input at the same time. It conducts electricity better than any other metal, so it is used in electronics, solar panels and vehicles. The Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2026 reports that industrial demand fell 3% to 657.4 million ounces in 2025, out of total demand of about 1.13 billion ounces. That is roughly 58% of all silver used last year.
Industrial demand is not a one-way bet either. In its 2026 outlook, the Silver Institute warned about the largest user, solar panels:
“While global solar installations are expected to continue rising, ongoing thrifting and outright substitution away from silver will result in falling silver PV demand.”
The Silver Institute, 2026 silver market outlook (research by Metals Focus), February 2026
What does this mean for investors? Silver’s price reacts to the economic cycle and to investor sentiment at the same time. When both pull in the same direction, the moves can be dramatic. That is why silver is more volatile than gold, and why the value of silver can drop sharply when industry slows down, even if investors still want to buy silver.

| Feature | Gold | Silver |
|---|---|---|
| Spot price, 2 October 2026 | A$5,966.56 per oz t | A$87.19 per oz t |
| Price per gram | A$191.83 | A$2.80 |
| Main demand | Jewellery, investment, central banks | Industry (about 58% in 2025), investment, jewellery |
| Annualised volatility (1 year, AUD) | 17.3% | 39.2% |
| GST-free fineness (ATO) | 99.5% or more | 99.9% or more |
| Perth Mint allocated storage fee | 1% a year | 1.9% a year |
Price Performance: One Year of Gold and Silver in AUD
Past performance does not predict the future, but it shows how each metal behaves. Here is the last year in Australian dollars, with both prices set to 100 on 2 October 2025.
The year had two very different halves:
- October 2025 to January 2026: both metals rallied hard. Gold peaked at A$7,736.89 per ounce on 29 January 2026. Silver peaked the same day at A$165.70, more than double its price four months earlier.
- February to July 2026: both fell back. Gold bottomed at A$5,732.78 on 20 July. Silver dropped to A$79.97 on 17 July.
- End result: on 2 October 2026, gold was 2.2% higher than a year earlier at A$5,966.56, and silver 22.4% higher at A$87.19.
Did silver win? On the year-on-year number, yes, silver outperformed gold. But an investor who bought silver at the January peak was still down about 47% in October. That is the trade-off in one sentence.
Volatility and drawdowns
Volatility measures how much a price swings from day to day. A drawdown is the fall from a previous peak to a later low. Both tell you how a metal feels to own.
In plain numbers, silver moved more than 3% in a single day 59 times during the year. Gold did that 8 times. Ask yourself a simple question: would you sell in a panic after a 14% one-day drop? If the answer is yes, silver may not suit you.
The Gold/Silver Ratio
The gold/silver ratio, also called the gold-to-silver ratio, shows how many ounces of silver you need to buy one ounce of gold. It is calculated as the gold price divided by the silver price.
- 2 October 2025: 81.9
- 27 January 2026 (lowest in the year): 46.2
- 2 October 2026: 68.4
Some investors switch between the metals when the ratio looks high or low by historical standards, for example choosing silver over gold when the ratio is high. It is a useful gauge, not a signal that works on schedule. You can follow it on our gold/silver ratio chart.
Costs: Premiums, Storage and Insurance
The spot price is only part of the cost. What you really pay depends on the dealer premium, postage and storage. On all three, silver usually costs more per dollar invested.
Premiums over spot
The premium is what you pay above the value of the metal. Here is the formula:
Premium % = (dealer price − spot value of the metal) / spot value × 100
We checked listed prices at Australian dealers in our database on 3 October 2026 and compared them with the spot close of 2 October 2026. This is a snapshot from a small number of listings, not a market average, and it excludes postage.
| Product | Dealer | Listed price | Premium over spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Kangaroo 1 oz | Australian Bullion Company | A$6,183.00 | 3.6% |
| Silver Maple Leaf 1 oz | Australian Bullion Company | A$100.70 | 15.5% |
| Silver Krugerrand 1 oz | Australian Bullion Company | A$100.70 | 15.5% |
| Silver Britannia 1 oz | Australian Bullion Company | A$108.80 | 24.8% |
| ABC Bullion cast silver bar 1 kg | Australian Bullion Company | A$3,135.00 | 11.8% |
| American Silver Eagle 1 oz | KJC Bullion | A$118.02 | 35.4% |
Why is silver’s premium so much higher? Minting, shipping and handling a silver coin costs a similar dollar amount to a gold coin, or more, because silver is bulkier. Yet the silver inside is worth about 68 times less per ounce, so those costs take a much bigger bite.
See current prices: investment silver, investment gold and 1 kg silver bars.
Storage: weight and fees
How much space does A$10,000 take up? At the 2 October 2026 spot price:
| A$10,000 at spot | Gold | Silver |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 52 g (about 1.7 oz t) | 3.57 kg (about 115 oz t) |
| Volume of the metal | about 2.7 cm³ | about 340 cm³ |
| Perth Mint allocated storage, per year | 1% (A$100) | 1.9% (A$190), or 0.95% pool allocated |
The Perth Mint charges no fee for unallocated metal, but in that case you hold a claim on metal rather than specific bars in your name. For a full guide to safes, vaults and insurance, see our article on storage.

Tax on Gold and Silver in Australia
For tax purposes, gold and silver are treated in a very similar way. Two taxes matter most.
GST
Under the ATO’s ruling GSTR 2003/10, “precious metal” means gold of at least 99.5% fineness, silver of at least 99.9% fineness or platinum of at least 99% fineness, in an investment form. A dealer’s sale of precious metal to you is input taxed, so no GST is added. In practice:
- 99.99% gold coins and bars, and 99.9% or 99.99% silver coins and bars, generally qualify,
- 22 carat gold coins (91.67%), such as the Krugerrand, are below the gold threshold,
- sterling silver (92.5%) and jewellery do not meet the test.
Capital gains tax
When you sell gold or silver for more than you paid, the gain is generally subject to capital gains tax (CGT). Today, individuals who hold an asset for at least 12 months can usually claim the 50% CGT discount.
That may change. In the 2026-27 Budget, the government announced it intends to replace the 50% discount from 1 July 2027 with cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax on real capital gains, with gains made before that date keeping the discount. Check the rules in force when you sell on the ATO website, and keep every invoice to prove your cost base.
Liquidity: How Easy Is It to Sell?
Both metals are easy to sell in Australia. Most large bullion dealers buy back popular coins and bars from the public. There are still practical differences:
- Gold: high value in a small package, so selling A$50,000 means a few coins or one bar.
- Silver: the same amount weighs more than 17 kg, so transport and handling matter.
- Buy-back spread: dealers pay less than they charge. The gap is usually wider for silver in percentage terms.
- Cash rules: bullion dealers must report cash transactions of A$10,000 or more to AUSTRAC, so expect to show ID for larger cash deals.
Ways to Invest in Gold and Silver in Australia
How can you invest in gold and silver? There are three common routes, and each one gives you a different kind of exposure.
- Physical gold and silver: bars and coins bought from a dealer or a mint. You own the metal directly, with no counterparty, but you pay a premium and must store and insure it.
- Exchange-traded products on the ASX: funds backed by physical metal, such as Perth Mint Gold (PMGOLD), Global X Physical Gold (GOLD) and Global X Physical Silver (ETPMAG). They trade like shares and avoid storage at home, but you hold units, not bars.
- Mining shares: companies that produce gold or silver. Their prices follow the metal only loosely, because they also depend on costs, debt and management.
This guide focuses on physical precious metals, because that is where premiums, GST and storage make the biggest difference. Unlike stocks and bonds, physical bullion pays no interest or dividends, so your return comes only from the price change minus your costs.
Is gold or silver a better hedge against inflation?
Both metals are often used as a hedge against inflation, but the link is loose over short periods. Gold has the stronger record as a long-term store of value, while silver’s industrial uses tie it more closely to the economic cycle. Prices can fluctuate for years without tracking the consumer price index, so a hedge works best when you hold for the long term.
How did gold and silver behave in past crises?
The global financial crisis of 2008 is a useful test. Measured in US dollars, silver fell by more than half between its March 2008 high and its October 2008 low, while gold fell by roughly 30% over the same period and recovered sooner. Gold demand also tends to rise in periods of geopolitical tension, when central banks and investors look for assets with no issuer behind them. Silver usually follows gold in those periods, but with bigger swings in both directions.
Which Products to Buy
The product matters as much as the metal. When you buy gold and silver as bars and coins, popular choices in Australia include:
Gold
- 1 oz Kangaroo: 99.99% gold, made by The Perth Mint, A$100 face value. See Kangaroo gold coin prices.
- 1 oz and 100 g bars: a low premium per gram when bought from a well-known refiner. Compare gold bars.
Silver
- 1 oz Kangaroo and Kookaburra: 99.99% silver, A$1 face value, from The Perth Mint. See Kangaroo silver coin prices.
- 1 kg bars: usually a lower premium per ounce than coins. Compare silver bars.

Gold or Silver: Which Should You Choose?
Choose gold if:
- you want the metal with smaller price swings,
- you invest larger amounts and care about storage space and fees,
- you want low premiums on standard 1 oz coins and bars,
- you may need to sell quickly without moving heavy boxes.
Choose silver if:
- you accept large drops in exchange for larger possible rises,
- you start with a small budget and want to buy whole 1 oz coins,
- you have space to store metal that is about 68 times heavier per dollar,
- you want exposure to industrial demand as well as investment demand,
- you want to invest in silver gradually, a few gold and silver coins at a time.
Can you hold both?
Yes, and many Australians do. Holding both adds diversification within your metals. A common approach is to keep gold as the larger core and silver as a smaller, higher-risk position. There is no proven “right” split. It depends on your budget, time frame and how you react when prices fall. A licensed financial adviser can help you fit metals into your wider plan.

Common Mistakes
- Judging by the last year only. Silver’s 22.4% gain hides a 51.7% fall along the way.
- Ignoring premiums. A 25% premium on a silver coin means the price must rise 25% before you break even.
- Forgetting storage. Silver takes about 68 times the space of gold for the same value.
- Buying non-investment silver. Sterling silver and jewellery are not GST-free precious metal and sell for less.
- Trying to time the market. Claims about the “best month” to buy are not supported by reliable evidence, and market conditions can change quickly after record highs.

FAQ: Gold vs Silver Investment
Is gold or silver a better investment in Australia?
It depends on your goals. Gold has been steadier and cheaper to buy and store, while silver has offered bigger gains and bigger losses, as the past year in AUD showed.
Is silver more volatile than gold?
Yes, silver is much more volatile. Over the year to 2 October 2026, its annualised volatility in AUD was 39.2%, compared with 17.3% for gold.
Is there GST on gold and silver in Australia?
No GST is added to gold of at least 99.5% fineness or silver of at least 99.9% fineness in investment form. Lower-purity items, such as 22 carat coins or sterling silver, do not meet the ATO’s test.
Do I pay capital gains tax on gold and silver?
Yes, gains on gold and silver bullion are generally subject to CGT. Individuals holding for at least 12 months can currently claim a 50% discount, but the government has announced changes from 1 July 2027.
Will silver ever be worth more than gold?
There is no sign of that. On 2 October 2026, one ounce of gold was worth 68.4 ounces of silver, and the ratio did not fall below 46 during the year.
Why are silver coins so expensive compared with spot?
Minting, shipping and dealer costs per coin are similar or higher for silver, but a silver coin contains far less value. In our snapshot, 1 oz silver coins cost 15.5% to 35.4% over spot.
Should I buy gold or silver with A$1,000?
With A$1,000, you can buy several 1 oz silver coins or one small gold item, such as a 1/10 oz coin, which was listed at A$690.80 at one Australian dealer on 3 October 2026 (15.8% over spot). Small gold items carry higher premiums, so compare the price per gram first.
Compare Gold and Silver Prices Before You Buy
Whatever you choose, the dealer you buy from can change your cost more than the metal itself. metalsradar compares prices from Australian bullion dealers and shows the premium over spot for every offer, so you can see the real cost per ounce.
