US Dollar and Gold Price: Is There a Link for Australians?

US Dollar and Gold Price: Is There a Link for Australians?

Key Takeaways

  • Yes, the US dollar and the gold price are linked: gold is traded and benchmarked in US dollars, so a weaker dollar usually makes gold look more expensive in USD, and a stronger dollar usually does the opposite.
  • The link is a tendency, not a rule: interest rates, central bank buying and fear in markets can push gold and the dollar in the same direction for months.
  • Australians see a second layer: between 25 September 2025 and 28 October 2026, gold rose 7.6% in US dollars but only 1.1% in Australian dollars, because the Australian dollar gained about 6.5% against the US dollar.
  • The Australian dollar works like a partial cushion: in our data, daily gold moves in AUD were smaller than in USD (average daily move 0.72% against 0.78%).
  • For a buyer, the AUD price is the one that counts: dealer premiums and delivery are added on top of the AUD spot price, not the USD one.

Most gold news is written in US dollars. A headline says gold hit a record, or crashed, and the figure is always per ounce in USD. But if you buy a Kangaroo coin in Brisbane or sell a bar in Perth, you pay and get paid in Australian dollars. So how much does the US dollar really matter to you?

In this guide, we explain how the US dollar and gold price are connected, why the link sometimes breaks, and what happens when you add the Australian dollar to the picture. We use 13 months of daily spot prices from our precious metals price comparison and current offers from Australian dealers.

Why Is Gold Priced in US Dollars?

The international gold market uses the US dollar as its common unit. Large trades in London, New York and Asia are quoted in USD per troy ounce, and so is the main global benchmark.

The LBMA Gold Price is set twice each business day in auctions run by ICE Benchmark Administration, starting at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. The LBMA publishes sterling and euro figures too, but it describes them as indicative prices. The reference number most of the market quotes is the US dollar one.

What does this mean in practice? Every price in another currency, including the Australian spot price, starts as a US dollar price that is converted at the current exchange rate:

Gold price in AUD = gold price in USD ÷ AUD/USD exchange rate

On 28 October 2026, our daily spot reading was US$4,030.90 per ounce and A$5,736.13 per ounce. Divide one by the other and you get the exchange rate built into those prices: about 0.7027 US dollars per Australian dollar.

How Does the US Dollar Affect the Gold Price?

The textbook answer is an inverse relationship: when the US dollar weakens, the gold price in USD tends to rise, and when the dollar strengthens, gold tends to fall. There are a few reasons behind it.

1. Gold gets cheaper for the rest of the world

When the US dollar falls, buyers who hold euros, yen, rupees or Australian dollars can buy the same ounce for less of their own money. More demand from those buyers can lift the USD price. When the dollar is strong, the same ounce costs them more, and demand may soften.

2. Gold and the dollar compete as safe assets

Both gold and US Treasury bonds are places where investors park money when they are nervous. If investors trust the dollar less, for example because of high US inflation or large government deficits, some of them move part of their savings into gold instead.

3. Interest rates change the opportunity cost

Gold pays no interest. A US dollar deposit or a Treasury bill does. When the US Federal Reserve raises its target rate, holding dollars pays more, and holding gold “costs” more in lost interest. Rate cuts work the other way. Higher US rates also tend to support the dollar, so rate decisions often move both at once.

Is the inverse link reliable? Not always. It is a tendency that shows up over long periods, and many analysts expect it to weaken at times. We look at those exceptions further down.

Gold in USD vs Gold in AUD: What Our Data Shows

Here is where the story changes for Australians. The chart below starts both prices at 100 on 25 September 2025 and follows them every day to 28 October 2026.

Gold price in US dollars and Australian dollars, indexed to 100 on 25 September 2025, daily to 28 October 2026 90 100 110 120 130 140 150 Oct 25 Jan 26 Apr 26 Jul 26 Oct 26 USD 107.6 AUD 101.1

Both lines climb into late January 2026 and then fall back. But the AUD line rises less and ends lower. On 28 October 2026, gold was 7.6% above its September 2025 level in US dollars and just 1.1% above it in Australian dollars.

The implied rate can differ slightly from the official rates published by the Reserve Bank of Australia, because the two prices are read at the same moment rather than at the RBA’s fixing time.

Look at February and October 2026. In USD, gold fell from US$5,280.20 to US$4,030.90, a drop of 23.7%. In AUD it fell from A$7,422.26 to A$5,736.13, a drop of 22.7%. The exchange rate moved only about 1.2% over those eight months, so both investors lost almost the same share. The bigger gap opened earlier, between September 2025 and February 2026, when the Australian dollar gained ground.

Why the Australian Dollar Often Moves With Gold

The Australian dollar is often called a commodity currency. Australia is a major producer and exporter of gold, iron ore and other raw materials, so its currency tends to strengthen when commodity prices and global risk appetite rise, and weaken when they fall.

For a gold investor, this has a clear effect. When gold rallies in US dollars, the Australian dollar often rises too, and the stronger currency takes part of the gain away in AUD terms. When gold falls in USD, the Australian dollar often weakens, which softens the loss.

Does our data back this up? Yes, in part. We compared 398 daily changes between 25 September 2025 and 28 October 2026:

  • the daily change in the USD gold price and the daily change in the implied AUD/USD rate had a positive correlation of 0.43,
  • on 232 of the 398 days (58%), the two moved in the same direction,
  • the average daily move in the gold price was 0.78% in USD and 0.72% in AUD,
  • the standard deviation of daily moves was 1.18% in USD and 1.07% in AUD.

A correlation of 0.43 is moderate, not strong. The cushion works on many days and fails on others. Still, over 13 months, the AUD price of gold was a little calmer than the USD price.

Three phases in 13 months

The period splits neatly into three parts. The table shows how gold and the currency moved in each one.

Period Gold in USD Gold in AUD AUD vs USD
25 Sep 2025 to 29 Jan 2026 (rally to the peak) +45.8% +36.3% +6.9%
29 Jan 2026 to 25 Jun 2026 (correction) −26.6% −25.0% −2.2%
25 Jun 2026 to 28 Oct 2026 (sideways) +0.6% −1.2% +1.8%
Whole period +7.6% +1.1% +6.5%

During the rally, an Australian investor gained almost ten percentage points less than a US investor. During the correction, the Australian investor lost a little less. That is the cushion at work, in both directions.

The biggest daily moves

Big days tell the same story. On most of the sharpest moves in our data, the AUD price moved less than the USD price.

Date Gold in USD Gold in AUD AUD vs USD
30 January 2026 −7.08% −6.01% −1.14%
19 March 2026 −4.50% −3.75% −0.78%
2 February 2026 −4.16% −3.99% −0.17%
3 February 2026 +4.55% +3.92% +0.61%
28 January 2026 +3.80% +2.68% +1.09%
25 March 2026 +3.37% +3.44% −0.06%

Notice 25 March 2026. Gold rose 3.37% in USD and the Australian dollar slipped slightly, so gold rose a touch more in AUD. The cushion is a habit, not a law.

When the Dollar and Gold Rise Together

If the inverse link were perfect, gold and the US dollar would never climb at the same time. In reality, they sometimes do. Here are the usual reasons:

  • Market panic: in a sharp sell-off, investors may buy both US Treasuries and gold as safe places, so both rise.
  • Central bank buying: large purchases of gold by central banks can lift the price regardless of what the dollar does.
  • Problems outside the US: trouble in Europe or Asia can push money into the dollar and into gold at the same time.
  • Inflation fears: if investors expect inflation to stay high, gold can rise even while the Fed keeps rates firm and supports the dollar.

So should you predict gold from the dollar? Probably not. The dollar is one force among several, and on any given week another one may be stronger.

What It Means When You Buy Gold in Australia

Here is the practical point. When you buy bullion from an Australian dealer, the price starts from the AUD spot price, then the dealer adds a premium and delivery. The USD headline price matters only through the exchange rate.

A quick calculation shows how much the currency counts. If the exchange rate on 28 October 2026 had still been 0.6598, the level of 25 September 2025, the same US$4,030.90 ounce would have cost about A$6,109 instead of A$5,736.13. That is roughly A$373 per ounce, purely from the currency.

These are 1 oz gold offers from Australian dealers in our dealer comparison, checked on 28 October 2026. The spot price at the time of the check was A$5,743.81 per ounce.

The gap between the cheapest and the dearest offer here is A$114.07 for the same weight of gold. That is a third of what the currency moved the price over 13 months, and you control it simply by comparing. Our guide to the gold premium over spot in Australia explains how these mark-ups work, and the cheapest way to buy gold in Australia compares sizes and delivery.

One more local detail. Investment gold of at least 99.5% purity is GST-free in Australia under ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10, so the dollar and the dealer premium are the main moving parts of your price. Our glossary entry on GST on gold covers the exceptions.

How to Read Gold News as an Australian

Gold headlines will keep coming in US dollars. These steps help you turn them into something useful:

  1. Check the AUD price, not only the USD price. A record in USD is not always a record in AUD, and the reverse is also true.
  2. Look at the Australian dollar on the same day. If both gold and the AUD rose, your local gain is smaller than the headline.
  3. Think in months, not days. The daily link between gold and the dollar is noisy, as our data shows.
  4. Compare the total cost. Premium and delivery are often a bigger lever than timing the exchange rate.
  5. Remember that you sell in AUD too. If you plan to sell in Australia, your result depends on the AUD price at the time you sell.

Some Australian investors buy gold partly because it can hold value when the local currency weakens. Gold priced in USD acts as a kind of foreign currency asset, which is one reason it appears in some gold investment plans alongside shares and property. FAQ: US Dollar and Gold Price

Does gold go up when the US dollar goes down?

Often, yes. A weaker US dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies, which can lift demand and the USD price, but other factors can override this for weeks or months.

Why does the gold price differ in AUD and USD?

The AUD price is the USD price converted at the current exchange rate, so when the Australian dollar rises, gold in AUD rises less or falls more than gold in USD.

Is the gold price in Australia higher when the Australian dollar is weak?

Yes, all else equal. A weaker Australian dollar means each US dollar ounce costs more Australian dollars, so the local gold price goes up.

How do US interest rates affect gold?

Higher US interest rates usually weigh on gold, because gold pays no interest and a stronger dollar often follows, while rate cuts tend to support the gold price.

Do gold and the US dollar ever rise together?

Yes, they can. In a market panic or a crisis outside the US, investors sometimes buy both the dollar and gold as safe assets.

Should Australians follow the USD gold price?

It helps to follow it for context, but the AUD spot price is the figure your dealer uses when you buy or sell bullion in Australia.
