Specifications
About this product
A 20 gram 24K gold bar holds 20 g of gold, about 0.643 troy ounces. It is the largest gold bar in our Indian comparison and is aimed at buyers who want plain bullion with a low making charge per gram. Each jeweller or refiner seals its bar in its own card and states its own fineness; among the 20 g bars we track, the stated purity is 999, and some refiners also make 999.9 bars.
What you are paying for
As with every gold product sold in India, the price has three parts: metal value at the day’s rate, a making or minting charge, and 3% GST on both. At 20 g the metal value dominates. The making charge per gram is usually lower than on small bars and coins from the same seller, which is the main reason to buy this size.
Two habits help at this weight:
- compare on the same day, because the gold rate moves all offers at once,
- look at the premium over metal value, not only the final price, since a small percentage gap is a large rupee gap here.
Daily rates from the IBJA are quoted per 10 g without GST and making charges; double that rate for the bare metal value of this bar. For the longer view, see our gold price chart.
One 20 g bar or smaller pieces?
A single bar keeps costs down. Two 10 g bars, or a mix of sizes, cost a bit more but let you sell or give away part of your holding later without selling everything. Decide based on how you are likely to use the gold.
Purity check
A 999.9 bar contains slightly more pure gold than a 999 bar of the same weight. The difference is small but measurable at 20 g. Compare like with like, and check that the fineness on the card matches the listing and the invoice.
Paperwork and storage
- Keep the card sealed and note the serial number.
- File the tax invoice with the bar.
- Read the seller’s buyback or exchange terms in writing.
- Plan storage before delivery: a bank locker or a home safe, and check whether your insurance covers bullion.
