About this product
The 10 gram 24K gold coin is the reference size for gold in India. Daily rates published by the IBJA (India Bullion and Jewellers Association) and quoted in the media are given per 10 g, so a 10 g coin is the easiest product to set against the headline rate. It contains 10 g of gold, about 0.322 troy ounces, at a fineness of 995, 999 or 999.9 depending on the brand.
Reading the price against the daily rate
IBJA rates exclude 3% GST and making charges. A shop price for a 10 g coin adds both:
- Metal value: close to the day’s 10 g rate for that purity.
- Making or minting charge: set by each seller and the main source of price differences.
- GST: 3% on metal value plus making charge.
Subtract the rate from the shop price and you see roughly what each seller charges on top. Because jewellers and refiners each sell their own design, metalsradar puts their 10 g coins of the same purity in one list, sorted by price, so that comparison takes seconds. For the trend in the metal value itself, see our gold price chart.
Why many buyers settle on 10 g
At this size the making charge is a smaller share of the price than on 1 g to 5 g coins, while the coin is still a manageable amount to buy in one go. It is also easy to value at any time: multiply the day’s per-gram rate by ten. That makes 10 g a common choice for people who buy gold to hold rather than to give.
Coin or bar at 10 g?
Jewellers also sell 10 g bars. The gold content is the same if the purity is the same. Compare both lists: depending on the seller, the coin or the bar may carry the lower making charge on a given day.
What to check
- Fineness on the coin and in the listing. A 995 coin holds less pure gold than a 999.9 coin of the same weight.
- Sealed packaging and a certificate or assay card, kept intact.
- The invoice, which records the GST you paid.
- The seller’s written buyback or exchange policy.
Keep the coin in its pack in a dry, secure place. A bank locker is a common option for larger holdings.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Indian gold rates quoted per 10 grams?
IBJA publishes its gold rates per 10 g, and most media follow that convention. A 10 g coin is therefore the easiest product to compare with the daily rate.
How much above the IBJA rate is a 10 g coin?
The difference is the making charge plus 3% GST, and it varies by seller. This page shows current prices so you can see the gap.
Is a 10 g coin or a 10 g bar cheaper?
It depends on the seller and the day. With the same purity the gold content is identical, so compare both lists.
How many troy ounces is 10 grams of gold?
About 0.322 troy ounces.
