The ask is what you pay. The bid is what the dealer will pay you if you sell it back. The gap is the spread, and it is usually wider than the <a href=\"premium}}\">premium over spot<\/a> alone, because the bid often sits below the <a href=\"spot-price}}\">spot price<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Example with fixed numbers<\/h3><p>Assume spot is \u00a31,600 per ounce (an illustration only). A dealer sells a 1 oz gold Britannia at \u00a31,664 (4% over spot) and buys it back at \u00a31,584 (1% under spot). The spread is \u00a380, which is 4.8% of the purchase price. If the gold price does not move, you lose \u00a380 by buying and selling. Dealers bid more for what they can resell quickly.<\/li><li>Keep the original packaging and any certificate. Damaged or cleaned coins may be bought back at a lower price.<\/li><li>Compare buyback quotes before you sell.
