This entry covers what the troy ounce means when you compare prices: fine weight, gross weight and the cost per ounce of pure gold.

Gross weight and fine weight

A coin has two weights. Gross weight is what it weighs on the scales. Fine weight is the pure gold or silver inside, worked out from the fineness. Dealers price bullion on fine weight, so this is the number to compare.

Example: Britannia vs Sovereign

1 oz gold Britannia: gross weight 31.21 g at 999.9 fineness, so it holds one full troy ounce of gold.

Full Sovereign: gross weight 7.98 g at 22 carat (916.7). Fine weight is 7.98 x 0.9167 = 7.32 g, which is 7.32 / 31.1035 = 0.2354 troy oz.

So roughly 4.25 Sovereigns contain the same gold as one 1 oz Britannia. To compare them fairly, divide each delivered price by its fine weight. Our gold price per gram in pounds helps with grams, and the 1 oz gold Britannia price comparison shows what UK dealers charge for a full ounce today.

Why it matters when you buy in the UK

The spot price is quoted per troy ounce in US dollars and converted into pounds. Bars sold in grams (1 g, 20 g, 100 g) need converting before you can compare them with ounce coins: a 100 g bar holds 3.215 troy ounces. When you work out the premium over spot, always use the fine weight in troy ounces, or the percentage will be wrong.

Watch out for listings that just say "1 ounce" on cheap medallions or plated items. Genuine bullion states the fine weight and fineness on the coin or the bar.

Related terms

Fineness Spot Price Bullion

FAQ

<details open>

Where can I find a troy ounce conversion table?

Our troy ounce guide on the blog has the full conversion table and the history of the unit.
