Outside the UK, the usual answer is “bars for the lowest price, coins for flexibility”. In Britain the maths is different, because VAT and Capital Gains Tax change the cost of both.

In this guide, we compare silver bars and coins with real prices from UK dealers on 20 October 2026. We look at the premium you pay, what dealers pay you back, how VAT and CGT apply, and which option suits which buyer. You can follow live prices on our silver bars and silver coins comparison pages.

Silver Bars vs Coins: The Basic Difference

A silver bar is a block of fine silver made by a refinery or mint. It carries the maker’s name, the weight and the fineness, usually 999 (99.9% silver). A silver bullion coin is issued by a national mint, has a face value and is usually one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of 999 or 9999 silver.

Both are bullion. You buy them for the metal, not for rarity. Here is how they compare in practice:

Feature

Silver bars

Silver coins

Typical sizes

1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 kg, 100 oz

1 oz (some 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg coins)

Issuer

refinery or mint

national mint, with a face value

VAT in the UK

20%

20%

Capital Gains Tax

chargeable asset

UK legal tender (Britannia) outside CGT; foreign coins chargeable

Price per ounce

lowest in large sizes, high in small sizes

a little above large bars

Selling in parts

only the whole bar

one coin at a time

Storage

compact

needs tubes or capsules

Sources: The Royal Mint (VAT), HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG76881 (CGT), Metals Radar price service.

So which matters more for you: the lowest price today, or flexibility and tax when you sell? The rest of this guide puts numbers on both.

How the Silver Price Has Moved

Before you compare premiums, look at the metal itself. The spot price is the price of silver for immediate delivery on the wholesale market. On 20 October 2026 it stood at £42.97 per troy ounce. A year earlier it was £38.89, and in between it climbed to £84.70 before falling back:

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 720 According to The Royal Mint, physical silver bullion, regardless of the country of issue, is subject to VAT at the current rate of 20%. Investment gold is VAT free for private buyers; silver is not.

The rule is the same for bars and coins. A Britannia does not escape VAT because it is a British coin, and a bar does not pay more because it is a bar. Read more in our glossary entry on investment gold and VAT.

The 20% floor

VAT sets a floor under every silver price. With spot at £42.97, silver plus VAT costs £51.56 per ounce before the dealer adds anything. So when you see a silver coin “only 30% above spot”, most of that gap is tax, not dealer margin.

That changes how you should read premiums:

the first 20% above spot is VAT and the same everywhere,

only what sits above that floor is the dealer’s margin, minting and delivery,

so the real gap between a bar and a coin is smaller than it looks.

Prices Compared: Bars vs Coins on 20 October 2026

A premium over spot is the difference between what you pay and the value of the silver inside. A 5 oz bar cost £61.18 per ounce, more than three of the five 1 oz coins in our table.

The dealer matters as much as the format. The same Britannia cost £56.38 at one dealer and £61.99 at another.

Put another way: £5,528.56 buys one 100 oz bar, while £5,525.24 buys 98 Tavex UK Britannias. That is 2 oz less silver, spread across 98 coins you can sell one by one. Compare current offers on the silver Britannia and 1 kilo silver bars pages.

Do not forget delivery

Delivery changes the picture for small orders. In our data, Tavex UK charged £5 per order and Hatton Garden Metals charged nothing on these items. One Britannia at £56.38 plus £5 delivery comes to £61.38, which is 42.8% above spot. On a 1 kg bar, the same £5 adds less than 0.3%.

Order in larger batches and the delivery fee stops mattering. See all UK dealers and their terms on our dealers page.

Capital Gains Tax: Where Coins Pull Ahead

VAT treats bars and coins the same. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) does not, and over a long holding period this matters more than a pound or two per ounce.

Why Britannias are outside CGT

HMRC’s Capital Gains Manual (CG76881) states that coins and bank notes which are sterling currency are not chargeable assets. The Royal Mint’s 1 oz silver Britannia is 999 fine silver with a £2 face value, and as UK legal tender it falls outside CGT. Any gain on it is yours to keep.

The same manual adds that only coins and bank notes which are legal tender are currency. A Maple Leaf, an Eagle or a Philharmonic is not sterling, so a gain on it can be taxable, just like a gain on a bar.

How CGT works on silver bars

For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the annual tax-free allowance is £3,000 for individuals. Above that, GOV.UK sets the rates at 18% for gains within the basic rate band and 24% for higher and additional rate taxpayers.

Here is a hypothetical example. Say you sell silver bars for an £8,000 gain, you have no other gains this year and you pay higher rate tax:

taxable gain: £8,000 minus the £3,000 allowance = £5,000,

tax at 24%: £1,200,

the same gain on Britannias: no CGT at all.

There is one more rule to know about. GOV.UK’s guide to personal possessions says you may have to pay CGT when you sell a possession for £6,000 or more, and lists coins among the examples. How this applies to your bullion depends on your circumstances, so check with HMRC or a tax adviser before you rely on it.

Product

VAT when you buy

CGT when you sell

Silver bars (any size)

20%

chargeable above the £3,000 allowance

Silver Britannia (UK legal tender)

20%

not a chargeable asset

Maple Leaf, Eagle, Philharmonic, Kangaroo

20%

chargeable above the £3,000 allowance

Sources: The Royal Mint (VAT on investments), HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG76881, GOV.UK Capital Gains Tax rates and allowances for 2026 to 2027.

We cover the tax side of each coin in more detail in our guide to the best silver coins for investment in the UK.

Selling Back: Bars vs Coins

The price you pay is only half the story. What will a dealer pay you when you sell? The gap between the two is the bid-ask spread, and with silver it is wide because the VAT you paid does not come back.

Our price service records the buy-back prices that UK dealers publish. Tavex UK paid £45.23 for a coin it sold at £55.58, which is above the spot price of the day. The 1 kg bar at the same dealer came second, and foreign coins came last. With a buy-back rate this high, the Britannia needs the smallest rise in the silver price before you are back to break even.

Bars have one more drawback when you sell: you sell the whole bar or nothing. Need £500? With coins you sell about eleven Britannias at the buy-back price above. With a 1 kg bar you sell £1,200 or more of silver, or you wait.

Check the dealers’ profiles before you sell: Tavex UK and Hatton Garden Metals both publish buy-back prices.

Storage, Security and Authenticity

Price and tax are the big factors, but practical matters count too. How will you store your silver, and how sure can you be that it is real?

Storage

Silver is bulky. A 100 oz bar weighs 3.11 kg. A hundred 1 oz coins need several tubes. Either way, silver takes far more space than gold of the same value, so plan your storage before you buy. Our guide on how to store gold safely covers home safes, vaults and safe deposit boxes, and the same options work for silver.

Authenticity

Fake bars and fake coins both exist. Modern bullion coins carry security features. The Britannia, for example, has several anti-counterfeit marks, and you can compare yours with our silver Britannia fake check. Bars rely on the refinery’s stamp, serial number and packaging. For practical tests, read how to tell the difference between real and fake silver.

The simplest protection is the same for both: buy from established dealers and keep the original packaging and invoice.

Should You Buy Silver Bars or Coins?

There is no single right answer, but the UK rules point most private buyers towards coins. Use this as a guide:

Choose silver coins (Britannias) if:

you expect to hold for years and want gains free of CGT,

you want to sell in small amounts when you need cash,

you buy in amounts below a few thousand pounds,

you value the highest buy-back rate in our data.

Choose large silver bars (1 kg or 100 oz) if:

you buy large amounts and want the lowest price per ounce,

your expected gains stay within your £3,000 annual allowance,

you have compact, secure storage,

you do not need to sell in small pieces.

And avoid small bars of 5 oz or 10 oz if price per ounce is your goal. In our data, 1 oz Britannias were cheaper per ounce than both.

Still deciding between metals? They cost only slightly more per ounce than large bars, they are free of Capital Gains Tax as UK legal tender, and they had the highest buy-back rate in our data on 20 October 2026.

Do you pay VAT on silver bars in the UK?

Yes, you pay 20% VAT on silver bars in the UK. The Royal Mint states that all physical silver bullion, regardless of the country of issue, is subject to VAT, so silver coins carry it too.

Are silver bars CGT-free?

No, silver bars are not CGT-free. They are chargeable assets, so gains above your £3,000 annual allowance can be taxed at 18% or 24% in the 2026 to 2027 tax year.

Are silver Britannia coins CGT-free?

Yes, silver Britannias are free of Capital Gains Tax for UK taxpayers. HMRC treats coins that are sterling currency as non-chargeable assets, and the Britannia is UK legal tender with a £2 face value.

Are small silver bars a good investment?

Small silver bars are usually poor value per ounce. On 20 October 2026, a 5 oz bar cost 42.4% above spot including VAT, while the cheapest 1 oz Britannia cost 31.2% above spot.

How much is a 1 kg silver bar worth?

A 1 kg silver bar holds 32.15 troy ounces, worth about £1,381.51 at the spot price of £42.97 on 20 October 2026. UK dealers in our data sold one for £1,783.68 to £1,813.63 including VAT and bought one back for £1,245.89 to £1,357.36.

Where is the best place to buy silver bars in the UK?

The best place is the dealer with the lowest total cost on the day, including VAT and delivery. Prices for the same product differed by more than 5% between UK dealers in our data, so compare offers before you buy.

Compare Silver Prices Before You Buy

Bar or coin, the price you pay depends heavily on the dealer.
