The number you see on dealer sites and on our live gold price chart is built from two wholesale markets:

COMEX futures in New York. CME Group's COMEX lists the benchmark gold futures contract for 100 troy ounces of gold of at least 995 fineness, plus silver futures for 5,000 ounces. During US hours, spot quotes track the most actively traded futures month, adjusted for the time to delivery.

The London over-the-counter market. Banks trade large 400 oz gold bars for immediate settlement. The LBMA Gold Price, set by auction twice a day in US dollars, is the reference used in many contracts.

Because gold also trades in Asia, the spot price moves from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon Eastern time, with a short daily pause.

Spot, bid and ask

Data feeds show a bid (what wholesale buyers pay) and an ask (what wholesale sellers want). The headline spot is usually the bid or the middle. The gap between them is the wholesale spread, which widens at night and on holidays when trading is thin.

Why you can't buy at spot

Spot is a price for large bars between banks and refiners. A 1 oz American Gold Eagle passes through refining, minting, the US Mint's authorized purchasers and a retail dealer, and each step adds cost. The extra over spot is the premium. On top of that come shipping, insurance and, in some states, sales tax.

Example with fixed numbers: if spot is $2,000 and a dealer asks $2,090 for a 1 oz coin, the premium is $90, or 4.5%. If another dealer asks $2,070 but charges $30 for shipping, the first offer is cheaper delivered. That is why our delivered price ranking for gold coins sorts by the final price, not by the sticker.

Other ways to read the spot price

Per gram, for small bars and jewelry: gold price per gram in USD.

For silver: silver spot price chart.

Relative value: the gold to silver ratio shows how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold.

Spot is always per troy ounce of pure metal, so a coin's fineness does not change how you compare it with spot.

Related terms

Premium Over Spot Bid-Ask Spread LBMA Good Delivery Troy Ounce

FAQ

<details open>

Who sets the gold spot price?

Nobody sets it alone; it comes from continuous trading in COMEX gold futures and the London wholesale market.

</details><details>

Can I buy gold at the spot price?

Retail buyers cannot, because every coin and bar includes a premium for minting, distribution and the dealer's margin.

</details><details>

Why is the spot price different on different websites?

Sites use different data feeds and may show bid, ask or a midpoint, and they refresh at different intervals.

</details>

<details class="gl-src-list">
Sources

CME Group COMEX Rulebook, Chapter 113 Gold Futures

LBMA: Precious metal prices

</details>

["post-20280","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
