The Royal Canadian Mint states that its bullion coins have no fixed mintage unless otherwise stated. It also sells a middle ground: \"premium bullion\" such as the Treasured Silver Maple Leaf, a 99.99% coin with a privy mark in themed packaging, some with a stated mintage (one 2026 issue lists 25,000 coins). You pay extra for the packaging and the limit, not for more silver.<\/p><h2>When you overpay<\/h2><p>Fixed-number example: suppose a 1 oz gold proof coin is issued at 2.5 times its metal value. If the gold price stays flat and collector demand fades, a dealer buying it back at bullion value pays you roughly 40% of what you spent. Gold would have to rise 150% just to break even. Numismatic value can rise, but only if collectors still want that specific coin when you sell.<\/p><ul><li>Many bullion dealers pay close to metal value for proof and coloured coins.<\/li><li>For GST\/HST, a coin counts as precious metal only if it meets the purity test and is issued by a government authority and may be used as currency. Lower-purity collector coins and private medallions fall outside that definition and are generally taxable. Losses on listed personal property can only be deducted from gains on listed personal property, and the $1,000 minimum cost and proceeds rule for personal-use property applies.
