How we calculate the silver price per gram

We take the spot price of one troy ounce of silver (31.1035 g) in Australian dollars and divide it by the weight of the ounce. That gives the price of 1 gram of pure silver. For lower finenesses we multiply by the metal content: 925 fineness means 92.5% silver.

This is the value of the metal alone. A buyer will usually pay you less, and bars and coins in shops cost more, because the dealer premium and minting cost are added on top.

Silver in jewellery and as an investment

Jewellery and cutlery are usually 925 (sterling silver) or 800. Investment coins and bars are normally 999 fine. Depending on the country, silver may be subject to sales tax, VAT or GST, unlike investment gold in many markets, which raises dealer prices relative to spot.

Why does a gram of silver cost more at a dealer?

A dealer sells a finished product: a bar or a coin. On top of the metal value come the premium, the minting cost and, depending on the metal and country, taxes. The smaller the product, the higher the premium per gram.
