Its price follows the spot price plus a margin, and a dealer will buy it back on the same basis. Three features set it apart:

High purity: usually 999 or 999.9 for gold, 999 for silver.

Standard weights: grams, tola, troy ounces or kilograms.

Recognised maker: a refinery or mint that buyers trust, ideally on a Good Delivery list.

Popular bullion in the UAE

Dubai's market grew around bars rather than national coins, and the range on dealer shelves reflects that.

Product

Weight

Who buys it

Small minted bars

1 g to 100 g

Gifts, regular savers

Tola bars

1 tola (11.66 g), 5 tola

Buyers who price in tola

TT bar

10 tola (116.64 g)

The classic Gulf savings bar

Kilobar

1 kg (32.15 oz)

Larger investors, traders

Gold coins

1 oz and fractions

Buyers who want global recognition

Silver coins and bars

1 oz to 1 kg

Smaller budgets

Among coins, UAE dealers mostly stock international issues: Britannia, Maple Leaf, Krugerrand, American Eagle and China Panda in gold, and Kangaroo or Vienna Philharmonic in silver. Coins cost a little more to make but are recognised everywhere, which helps if you might sell abroad. One UAE detail tips the balance: only metal of 99% purity or more is zero-rated for VAT, so a 999.9 Britannia is taxed at 0% while a 22 carat Krugerrand attracts 5%.
